Post by: patrick on December 25, 2006, 08:45:13 PM
hi there, was searching for this but couldn't find it, wondering what gears would i need to swap to restore mileage on a 1.6 8v with 31's  or 33's, details would be great like good place to purchase or other truck to obtain and lastly transfer case or diff. thanks in advance, its probably been asked, but thanks again. forgot to mention its a 1989 2dr 5spd

I'd recommend going with lower T-Case gears.  That's my plan.  ;D

but t-case gears wont reduce the high range in a track/kick. you will need to try to find 5.62 ring and pinions from an 89 1.3L sidekick, or 5.83 ring and pinions, both of which are difficult to find.

You're right about it not changing the high range in a 'Kick(just don't use 5th gear).
I had a parts rig with the factory 5.62 gears that I sold.  I would have liked to have kept them, but I got all my money back from the parts rig after keeping the 2 piece hardtop, new BFG MT's, new wheels and lift kit.  If I ever find another set I won't be selling them!
