i am changing the timing belt and the guid tells me to take off the rocker arms. do i have to take them off? or can i just line everthign up with the cams and pullyies and put the new belt on? and also to adjust the valve lash do i need to do anyhtign with the timing belt? sorry for all the questions, noob looking tolearn as much asiocan to keep the car as long as i can and then another and another hahahah

i know on the 1.6L 8 valve, you do not need to remove the rocker arms. i dont know about other engines....

Leave the rocker arms alone.
Find a copy of the FSM on the Internet (can you guess where there is a copy of the '88 FSM in pdf format in three parts? See my signature.) The complete process is described on page 3-50 and 3-51.
DO NOT remove the crankshaft pulleys by removing the big bolt on the end of the crankshaft! You are asking for a world of problems if you do. There are 4 smaller (5 for a TracKick) bolts that attach the accessory belt pulley to the crankshaft timing belt pulley. Remove these bolts to get the timing belt cover off.
Do not disturb the position of the camshaft or the crankshaft unless the timing belt broke. If that is the case, align the two pulleys per the FSM pictures and instructions turning them CLOCKWISE as necessary and install the belt as instructed. Once this is done, the rotor on the distributor should point at the #4 piston's spark plug wire.

You don't need to remove the rocker arms but the FSM does state that the valve lash should be opened out. This prevents the action of the valve springs from putting any tension on the cambelt that could affect the adjustment of the cam belt tensioner.

hey guys thanks. got it done. it was out of a fsm that i read tha.thats why i wasowndering lol. it wasn't out of your tho ack hahaha. go the pump and belt doe and the gas got a weee bit better but still cant figure it out. i the valve lash comes next. i bugs me to only get 150 KM to 19 L i knwo full size pickups that get better then that lol any other sugestions
