I have a Alpine CD stereo that came with my kick, but I did not use it much because the CD would skip on my dirt road and on other bumps. I won a video Ipod in a drawing, and I got a transmitter for it, and I can listen to my tunes without skipping. Problem is, now I noticed how poor the original speakers sound. :( I have some 6X9's That I have had for a long but they have never been installed in anything before, they should do good for the back. What about the front? I dont want to spend a lot, and save up for mechanical improvements, I think it would not take much for the sound to be better than the speakers that are there. Would it be better to relocate the front speakers to the front bottom of the door? How about speaker wire? Does it need to be replaced? I will not be running a lot of power, I think the stereo is 45watts X 4 channels.
Any suggestions? I know all you younger guys are more into the audio aspects of these rigs than me.
Thanks
Jeff

Mine has some pioneer speakers from what I am guessing is the early 1990s. They still sound pretty good, and are made in japan(which is what tells me they are fairly old)
-
I replaced my stock front speakers with some better quality ones. They are a standard size (4"?) so it was an easy upgrade.

Check out http://www.crutchfield.com/
They are pretty good and will answer the tough audio questions

Crutchfield is have a sale on 4" blankput speakers

The front speakers is the first thing i replaced after i upgraded my headunit. I'm usin Alpine 4" / 10cm ( i think) speakers... at RMS they're 25w, but max at 45/50w. They sound pretty awesome, and cope with the top of the range Alpine headunit i brought for it.
they cost me about £25, so i suppose like $45 to you guys, and got them from www.caraudiosecurity.com

The doors don't look very deep for mounting speakers and the pockets on the door panels seem to be in the way.I've been thinking about the same thing but haven't pulled the trim panels or gotten the measuring tape out yet.

replace the stock with aftermarket
and add an amp, sub, and possibly some tweeters if you like (really) clean highs
stock wiring should be alright
amp kit should be around 10 gauge for a basic system
heres what i have

mine have newer pioneer speakers in the front.
i wouldnt put any speakers in the doors because they are not sealed so water can get to the speakers.
i have heard that a 5 inch round speaker can fit in the front but i havent takent the covers off since to see if it is actually true or not
in my sidekick i have the two 4 inche pioneers in front and two pioneer 6.5 in the back side panels. then i put two lightning audio 6x9s in boxes behind the rear seat.
it sounds pretty good like that. but i want to cut two new holes in the panel that the seatbelt comes out of and put two more 6.5s in there to see what it would sound like
-
I measured in the door panel and there is only 2" of clearance in there. My speakers are pretty compact but still need 2.25" at least. :(
-
i have small 4" clarions that the previous owners put it, they sound pretty decent, but i relocated them to the inside of the console. where the plastics meet the floor, the cone fit right in there and i just screwed it right to the plastics heres where im talking about. this isnt my car, i have no pics of my interior.

i have pioneer 4" in the front, cant really go any bigger than that, in the rear i have some infinity 6.5" speakers. then a 10" JL sub out back. it sounds awsome, my deck has built in high pass and low pass filters. so it runs crystal clear at any volume. running a high pass filter through your mids will save them from self destructing, and do more of what they were ment to do. and the sub will take care of the bottom end. my box in the back fits nicely behind one of my rear seats. and i still have room for the other one to flip up, so i still can get grocerys and stuff.
no only if i could get my engine to run...........
