Title: Ford 9 to Vit drive line
Post by: Gary_Hill on January 11, 2007, 12:47:43 AM
Ok guys, this is my first time asking for help, but here goes. The White Vit ( big S on hood ) now has a Curry built Ford nodular 9, 31 spline, 5.83 r/p, ARB and Explorer disc brakes. I ordered it with smooth tubes, made a million measurements, cut the brackets off the busted Vit rear, made a few dozen more mearurements and chalk marks, welded everything on the new 9 inch and put it under the Vit.  Everything hooked up without a prybar. I made new brake lines from scratch, converted from standard to metric at the steel flex line to the proportioning valve. I haven't  hooked the E brakes up yet but thats next. Everything has come together without a glitch till now. MY QUESTION IS...how best to modify the Vit drive line to mate to the Ford 9.  8) The best local drive shaft shop scratched their heads and mumbled something about $60 an hr to research  the solution.. I know many of you have done this conversion already....help a brother out? Thanks in advance and the first round of beer is on me in MOAB....Gary   8)

if you have a section of a driveshaft that fits the 9" have them put that end on the vit driveshaft. or vice versa have the vit slip section welded onto the end of a driveshaft that fits the 9"

you could also call highangledriveline. Jesse probably has a flanged pinion flange that could be drilled for your vit driveshaft.

I know Mike H. made mention of finding a 9" with a flange instead of a yoke on a car in one of his articles/posts, so you may be able to get a flange from Currie, or possibly even a stocker off the same car Mike got his from and have it drilled to match up with the Vitara driveshaft.

From the Zukiworld Technical archives

I really didn't want to have a custom drive shaft made. After a little checking I found that the 76 Lincoln Continental had a flat pinion flange very similar to the Tracker. I took it to a local machinist and had it modified to fit a Tracker drive shaft.
