what is a normal gas mileage for 30-31" tires with no lift?
for some reason im only getting about 130-140 miles out of my 1989 sidekick. i dont know what could be wrong because runs good.
-
140 miles is about 225 Kms, and I'm fgetting between 225 and 250 kms right now in the winter. In the summer I get as much as 300kms per tank.

Thats about right if you have 31s and stock gearing. Its a little puzzling if you have no motor ;D
-
sounds normal to me....
These little 1.6's just weren't meant for the extra load of the big tires...
most don't even get 25 stock..
Hot Rod's 4 door gets the best I have ever heard of...
-
My 96 4 Dr. Tracker ( stock ) gets 300 miles plus from a tank. Around 27-28 mpg. Combined freeway and city driving. I've heard many reports of 30 - 35 mpg and more from Trackkick owners. I wonder why there are so many variations? Tire size and gearing I know contributes to the differences. I always do a major tune up when my mpgs go down before I do anything else.

I'm not kidding either. 5spd stock 5:12s
300miles to a tank (bone dry tho)
but for some reason (maybe winter gas here) I'm getting about 25 with my 31" winter tires
(they do seem a lil smaller)
But my 95 2dr only gets 21mpg 5spd 5:83s 32x10.50 radial superswampers.(also weighs 1000lbs more than 4dr)
Swapped out to BFGs M/Ts (32x11.50) maybe a lil better when i get around to driving it.

Thats strange. I have "heard" of Trackers getting 30mpg... but have NEVER come close in any of mine.
It is strange that the heavier 4 doors seem to get the best of all (25-27)
It's gotta be gearing. My Flea, at 4000 RPM on the highway is lucky to break 22.....
Never checked the Turtle... it goes about 2 days per tank..... LOL, not too many miles... that is all trail mileage.
I am sure the 4 speed autos, and 5 speed manuals do MUCH better than the 3 speed auto in the flea, cause even with just 235's... I am running some rpm's ALL THE TIME.... I get 160 to a tank, about 20mpg average in it, combined city/hwy.... of course I am pretty sure the torque converter isn't locking up either... gotta to get around to that someday.
-
I have the 5 spd 16V 4dr and try to keep my rpms fairly low on the shift 3-4 K. I get about 28 mpg even on a trip in 5th all the way at about 3,500 rpms. In Phoenix and in AZ you have to drive 75mph on the freeways or people almost shoot at you. I'd LOVE to know how Trackicks can get 30 plus mpg! Is the 4dr gearing different? I wonder how much 16 valves helps.
-
My '96 2-dr got 30 on good days, 28 on bad days. Consistently. And that was accurate, with miles/speed measured by mile-markers and stopwatch and compared to other cars on the same trips. Then I put on the 235-75s and it dropped to 25-26 (uncorrected, which seems about right). Top speed dropped to 75ish, too.
My 2003 with the l4 and the same 235/75s averaged 22-23 uncorrected. Never really measured it with the stock tires.
The same 2003 with stock (XL-7) tires but pushing the v6 through the l4's exhaust is getting 18-21. Haven't figured out top speed yet, but it's definitely over 110..
-
My '96 2 dr 16V 5 spd with 225's gets 28 MPG consistently IF... I keep the tire pressure pumped up to 32 psi (which makes it ride like a brick).
If I drop the tire pressure to the "factory recommended" 23 psi, mileage drops to about 22MPG.
Towing the camper with the tires pumped up it gets 25MPG.

I'd LOVE to know how Trackicks can get 30 plus mpg!
My 4dr, 5 spd,'98 Sport gets 33 on the highway. Part of it has to be driving technique. I avoid the Phoenix freeways. I stay below 65, usually 60 max. The kick isn't a racer, so I don't try . Old age taught me that hurrying usually doesn't pay. I learned to watch ahead and let the car slow down when the stop lights change. An additional benefit is long brake pad life--my '94 T100 had 130k miles with the original pads (still in good shape) when I sold it. My tires are one size larger than stock and I run them at 30 psi. They seem to wear evenly and the ride is acceptable. Lower pressure drops the mileage.

My 95 16v auto with torque converter lockup and 31x10.50 AT's gets an average 20mpg. Thats with the turbo. Before the Turbo I was getting around 23 combined. It definitly uses more fuel in the city now, probably because it accellerates a lot harder on boost. However, mileage in the mountains actually got better. Last weekends trip to the Poconos to go wheelin at Paragon showed the boosted motor works less hard on those long mountain grades, even pulling my small trailer with my swampers and gear on it. Exclusive mileage on the hiway at 65-70mph is better than 21mpg.
-
I get 21mpg consistently on the lowest grade gas with my 18"s on about 32psi
mostly city driving but everyweek ill hit the hwy for training
I normally go about 60-70mph
(especially because the law just changed and they arrest anyone going 80 or above)
and i would run more psi but it rides really hard and I dont want to ruin the rims
I couldve sworn I used to get more though
I think the most I hit per tank was a little over 300 miles (with my alloy 15s)

Hey REB a PHX guy huh? I gotta use the freeways, but yeah, the Tracker has slowed me down some which is alright. I'll try keeping it under 60 and see what happens

Hey REB a PHX guy huh? ...
I moved out of the Phoenix area (New River) about 6 years ago, but still have to go down to the valley to visit or shop occasionally. Don't really miss the traffic. I have found I can get around down there reasonably quickly and stay off the freeways. They are too dangerous for anyone trying to obey the speed limits or trying to maintain a safe following distance. Besides, I usually forget my bulletproof vest. :)

I get 180 max miles a tank
Standard '94 8v vitara/kick/tracker with calmini back half exhaust, no cat
Driving at (wait for it) UNDER 35mph 'cos thats my islands speed limit! And about half of that driving is offroad most of the time.
Would love to get more outta it, as i'm just about to stick on 6" and 32" mayb 33"s
Would the calmini manifold/header and a safani snorkal improve it at all?
-
Two things to bear in mind when making comparisons:
1. A 4dr has a bigger fuel tank and therefore generally does more miles per tank.
2. A US gallon is rather small.
-
let's put some metric numbers in here..... i get 400km per 50L tank everytime, very mixed driving but have noticed that since it's been cold the mileage is dropping a bit. also notice that if i run over 90 octane fuel my tracker runs much better, it's the 2.0L 4cyl with less than 40000km on it to date. running 31x9.5 swampers with 30psi on the street. if i drive over 100km\h the mileage drops on the highway for sure, especially with more weight loaded into it. at 60mph(100km\h) i'm sitting around 2700rpm i think.
-
30 psi isn't metric niether is 31 x 9.5 ;) joking... I went down to 23 psi and that tank bore about 25 mpg.. down 2-3 MPG. I'll try 30 psi on this tank. I have tiny 215 tires right now.
bzzr2 are you running stock gears, 5 speed, 2 door, 5th gear? I'm stock 4dr probably runing at 3200 rpm at 60 in 5th gear. I was wondering what my rpm would be with 30's or 31's.
-
true enough, i somehow trailed off the metric numbers there..... yes, stock 4.62 gears, 5spd, 2dr, 2003, running 5th on the highway. i double checked the rpm's and they are actually just a shade over 2500 |removethispart|@ 60mph/100kph. it runs fine but i do use 4th on hills quite often.
-
Thanks for that, bzzr2, that's about what I expected/hoped for stock gears. I drive lots of flat freeway at 65-80 mph in the deadly Phoenix quagmire. Hoping the rpms will help with mpgs a little to compensate.

Upping your tire pressure will help by reducing rolling resistance, but the larger tires won't (certainly didn't with me, anyway, and I only went to 29s). In 5th, your revs don't really make it up to the powerband before your speed reaches a point where the aerodynamics start killing you. Unlike a car that's making more than enough power at a certain RPM to handle the air resistance (in which case dropping the rpm's, will help), your truck is fighting a losing battle.
As an example, I'd wager (of course, I often lose bets..) that, with the larger tires and no tail wind, your wide-open top speed is higher in 4th than 5th.
-
I do most of my driving at 60-75 mph on dead flat freeway in not very windy Phoenix. You think dropping my average rpms in 5th gear from 3200 down into the high 2000s won't help my gas mileage? I get that moving bigger tires takes power so I'll lose some on hills and stop and go driving. But you think the wind sheer will kill huh? I was hoping for more of a break even than saving big bucks or anything like that. How much did you lose with 29's?
Thanks

Yep, dropping your rpms at a given speed also drops your power output. If our motors had a nice, fat, flat torque curve, dropping rpms wouldn't hurt as badly (power vs. wind) and you'd most likely get a gain. But that's just not the case with those 4-cyls. As I recall, I lost about two mpg, corrected for the odo/speedo change, in both my 96 and my 03. At slower speeds (50 or under) where it doesn't have to work so hard to push the air, the bigger tires probably would improve mileage like you'd think (although, to really max it, you'd have to downshift for all hill or acceleration events).
Now, if you want to REALLY destroy your mileage, flip open the "sunroof" on the convertible and drive across Kansas at 70+ mph with your upsize tires. I think I got 17-18 that day...highway...
