What usually causes slopy steering? I have a 1990 Tracker and get a lot of play in the steering wheel and I'm curious as to what to look for.
thanks

Worn out tie rod ends is usually the culprit. The steering box itself could be going bad, but these things normally last a long time.

how do you fix worn out tie rod ends?
-
just replace the tie rod ends. you can get them at any auto parts store

Awsome! Will do and it shouldn't be that much. 8)

I use to have the same problem with my '93 Kick. The steering wheel was able to turn of about 20 degrees without any effect on the direction!
The cause wasn't the tie rods but a small rubber-like damper called a rag joint, placed in the middle of the direction column.
I replace it (for about 15$) and everything's fine now.
BTW, that procedure was suggested by peoples on this forum: thanks guys!
;D

anyone have instructions?

If you are talking about the replacing the rag joint, iZook has an article on the subject.
You can easily find it by doing a search for rag at Ack's FAQ (see link in signature)

Cool, I'll probably replace it this weekend.
This site is awsome ;D

Well, I checked it out this morning and it doesn't seem to be the rag joint because it doesn't have one. I looked in both the Hayne's manuel and the Dealer manuel and neither of the two showed a rag joint in the diagram. I popped the hood on the Tracker and looked and no rag joint. So I'm back to the the tie rod ends.
