detail the steps that you took from complete stock to the last rebuild of the orange rig and what you would do different or maybe skip next time.
thank you
-
To detail that build would take days of typing at my pace. I have thought long and hard about building another street /offroad machine but I just dont have the time or the money.
I would build it in prerunner styling. It would involve a Calmini 2 inch suspension, frame chop in the front to lift an additional 5 inches and a custom 4 link rear with a welded XL7 rear axle. Severe fender trimming to clear 35s.

...with a welded XL7 rear axle...
Just out of curiosity, why the XL7 Axle??

28 spline and almost a 9 inch ring gear. I think it would be a good cheap swap. I think that I could make the e brake work and I would like to keep it as Suzuki as possible. We are looking into getting one to play with in the Dark Star.

hey what would you do differently to make it specifically a pre runner instead of the orange star setup. I guess it would have to be a jumper and high speed setup .
would you do a setup like chos fabrications xterra new control arm and coil over setup?

Mainly I would lighten it a ton by building tube bumpers and cutting inner fenders out and I would trim fenders more and less lift.

Hi Mike,
So do you sort of miss having a street rig? I know I miss seeing your old rig popping up from time to time - great rig that >:D
I have been knocking around a whole pile of options myself and have settled on running just 33's on my street rig - this way I do not have any major gearing issues or drive train strength issues. I have really enjoyed following your builds over the years and I sorta liked your rig best when it ran 33's way back when, but I understand the motivation behind your enhancements - oh god do I understand ( someone shoot me please ::) ).
I am going to fit my 37's on a trail only rig - this way highway gearing isn't a problem. I will be able to keep it nice and light too by dumping all the crap not needed - all BUT the heater because it gets cold in winter and I am soft LOL. Basically a motor, box , t case, axles, somewhere to sit and something to link it all up and have some steering and brakes when finished - just the basics.
I like what you said about keeping it low ( not too much lift ), I am heading this way myself. We do a lot of off camber stuff over here and big lifts just don't cut it ;) . Years of my rigs having occasional wee rests on their sides have convinced me that maybe I had over done things a little :o .
All the best and keep up the good work ;D

I very much miss having a street rig. I have been doing some thinking and we may be adding a new zuk to the family. ::) It will be something very streetable and for sure capable.

i have to admit I do like th 37's or 39's but for a dd I would not go more than 33's to many people have told me that they cannot use 5th gear when on 33's so if I every were to go big dd that would be my max but i kinda like the 31's 3 inch suspension and a very clean trimming job almost where is looks stock but not. i thinks insteat of my 235's i would have liked 31's but the street driving with BFM you can see a difference in acceleration and I still drive like an ass at times so really I need a barn and a forest behind me so I can have 2 trucks. I do like the prerunner winch bumpers and a tire carrier in the rear passenger section look and my be a fender flaring job for the tires.....that would look sweet. has anyone done a flat fender style job on a zuke front end?
-
I am with you on the 37 thing bus driver - looks freak'n awesome but way too many logistical issues and that is why I am sticking to no larger than 33's. I will not have as many issues on my rig though because it is a V6 and they handle the larger rubber no problems ;D
I am reserving my 37's to my trail only rig and will not be tempted otherwise. Although it is hard to resist ;)
I went out with a buddy of mine today and we crawled up a creek - rough stuff for sure. I can not wait to get my trail rig up and running again >:D

without welding and cutting how much can you do to a GV on the suspension side of things I am looking at replacing my kick with a 5spd GV and I want essentionally 31's on a 3 inch lift how would i do this on a budget but not cheaping out. I would rather not use spacers as I want as much useable suspension as possible.

I will have to get back to you on the GV questions. Honestly, Im not exactly sure cause I dont own a GV...yet. Also, I would include plenty of cutting and welding. >:D

hey Zues how did you do you 3inch and what does it look like now could you pm me a picture and maybe more details ....that is the vehicle I am replacing mine with and I wuould like to know the comparisons between the 2 door and the GVb4 and after the mods
thanks

bus driver,
I took the easy route and fitted Calmini kits to both my vehicles. I actually helped Calmini develop a 3" lift kit for the 2.0 V6 gen 1 body vehicles.

Zues thank you i like the GV and the look. how does the GV compare to a similar equiped tracker first gen? is it a nice riding machine on the highway and how well does it do on trails....I do not like rocks so more hard packed, mud and sand
Mike I should have known better than to ask you about not cutting or welding sorry for the laps there......haha
thanks for the help guys

bus - the GV is awesome. Most of the time I can stay in 2 wheel drive where others are in 4 lo. I just give it a bit of gas and she lights up throwing mud / rocks whatever for miles ;D . When you drop it into 4 lo there is plenty of power to take care of most things. I have not fitted my 5.1 r&p's yet either - it is still running stock 4.3's ;)
It is a deffinite step up from the 2.0 V6 - quite, comfortable on long journeys, stacks more power, deffinitely more refined - however, I like my gen1 2.0 V6 because the suspension is a better design ( read - more flex ) and it has similar characteristics power wise to the GV, just less of it - 2.0 V6 135 hp , 2.5 V6 165 hp. Not much but it all helps ;D
I like them both for different reasons - GV is my family adventure rig - 2.0 V6 is my club rig and is the one that takes the knocks :-\
-
i am not sure but I do not think that the 2.0 v6 came in canada so I would be at a loss for that part but I do like the family adventure part of the GV comfort is the main thing for when my little boy ( 5months old) and my wife is with me ....she is interested in more adventure in camping in the out back but she was in a bad car accident 5 years ago and she has a tender neck and back so the ride quality of my 2 door is a problem. do you have any action shots of the GV?
-
hey mike I know that you said you work in the steering industry and I am assuming that you are a licensed mechanic but what specifically do you do for a living? You do have a lot of tallent in fabrication I was wondering if it is a work thing or a hobby thing.
-
Action shots of my GV, nothing at present sorry. Usually myself and the family are in it and not taking pic's, haven't even got it stuck yet so no pic's there either LOL.
I will see if any of my club members have any for ya, no promises though. This is a common problem with my rigs ::). I must resolve this situation :P
