i've been here a while now and know i need to get lower gears for my kick when i finally go with bigger tires and lift. but i don't see where i can purchase those lower ratios you all talk about. i see calmini offers lower gears for transfer case, but not the actual transmission.
where & how do i get these?
-
You can't regear your transmission, you can regear your differentials. And your transfercase's Low range only.
-
Driveline catagory
Ring and Pinion gears 5.83 ratio
about $600

jooky|removethispart|@Suzuki,
Just remember that Transfer case gears for a Sidekick will only give you a low range reduction, If your looking
at running larger tires and want to get your high range down to accommodate them aswell you'll need  ring and pinions, they will give you a reduction in both ranges.
-
do what I'm working on!
Drop a sammi t-case in behind a 2wd tracker tranny.
1.4 HI RANGE reduction. Plus the low range is better also. Like 1.8 vs 2.2 or something like that.
Be able to pusj my 31's just fine and then some!! :o

hang on!
these

are supposedly a double gear drop for the xfer case. drop in high and low gear range. any opinions on this? i think it'd be a hellof a lot cheaper than dropping both the difs and x-fercase gears. :D

Those are Samurai gears which are available with a high range reduction as well. ::)
-
So why would he want to spend money when he could just put it in low range and leave it there? my high range has a 1.579 reduction, not too far off from 1.8 in the trackers or kicks.

well sorry they didn't specify..maybe they'd fit anyways :D
-
so where is the cheapest place to get decent tcase gears for tractors? last I checked, calamini wanted a g-note for their 4:1

Are u serious?
I guess with the 2wd low kit, it would be possible... ?
-
well, i'm going with a 3 inch lift and 32's, i also live in highway infested Los Angeles...that means i need the rig to be able to still reach highway speeds when not being off roaded, and on road driving will 75% of what this truck will be doing since it's not only my getaway car...but also my ONLY car :P
so what gears should i need to maintain freeway speeds?..and how much would they run?...and where can i buy them?
-
I run 33s on mine with stock gears. it needs just a bit more feathering to get rolling off the line, and because of the extra diameter of the tire I roll at 4000rpm at 70mph in 4th, where a stock vehicle will cruise at 4000rpm in 5th at 70mph.
Because you dont have any mnore horsepower availible, you wont actually go any faster on the highway just by changing gears, you will just get your 5th gear back.
if you install 5.89:1 gears in your diffs, you will be able to take off faster from a dead stop, and on the highway you'll cruise in 5th, much like when your vehicle was stock, except of course powerlosses from having all the extra weight on your wheels.

I'm running 32's on mine with the Calmini 4:24's and stock diff ratios at the moment. I find with the 32's I can hardly use 5th gear on road any more and  acceleration sucks hence why I'm going to fit 5:83 R&Ps from Calmini.
Only Down side to fitting the 5:83s (for me any way) is low range is now about as low as I want for the trails I wheel ( I don't have rocks to climb :P) and with the 5:83's although it will get my 5th back it will also lower the range another 14%.
Are you running an auto or Manual  ? as that will make a difference to what R&P's you'd want to run with 32's

That's been my point with the 4.24:1 T-case gears,
I think a 3:1 set or even a 2.5:1 set would give you
a nice reduction and not kill the top speed in low
range
-
thats definetly the cheapest.

That is where the samurai's are diffrent from trackicks,my 4 to 1's will do about 25 mph with 33's no problem, if you need to go faster than that I would just go high range. the samurai gears like the 8 to 1's also have a high range reduction like 24 percent so you could use high range more often with just the next size lower gear's like 4.30's,would love to get them for the snow!
-
I'm tempted to get something done, but it's like this.
2 sets of 5.83 gears is $600,
4.24 tcase is $650.
R&p will definately give better high range driveability, and driveline life expectancy. I ruined my front diff housing in a quagmire trying to apply full power to the front wheels only, the 583 gearde front would have lived because it was the pinion that pulled the housing apart. Maning, the torque inside the case is multiplied, not the torque going in.
Tcase is just infinitely better idea when wheeling, you can creep along at super low speeds, not have to feather the clutch on trails, no more bogging going up a steep hill. But twice the torque breaks twice the parts.
-
But twice the torque breaks twice the parts.
That's precisely why I'm getting my cheapo diff upgrade (auto 4.62 to man 5.12) ...
If the diff's are geared high then the stresses from a low geared tcase will just break stuff. I just wanna lower the diff gearing as much as possible (yet still get 60-70mph top speed), then put tcase gears into it (including a 2 low kit).
-
If your having troubles with low-low being too low then shift into 2nd!!!
-
My problem is I want a lower 1st and not a lower
3rd (Auto Trans) I have enough power with the
turbo to pull the taller gears, but there are times
when a lower 1st is a good thing, that and I like
the way the turbo spools quickly with the T-case
in low range, it makes 4 wheel power slides easy.
-
an automatic is another way to get lower gears, I will probably get one when I'm old ;D
-
Do some math as to what is right for you and your purposes. For example in Hi Range in my Sami from stock to Lower gears and bigger tires:
4.16 T-case + 4.62 Diffs - 31" Tires = Tot Reduction
12% + 24% - 16% = 20%
In Lo Range I'm down around 90%. For you I'm not sure what gears your starting with but this example may help you in deciding what to get. Most aftermarket gears tell ya what the reduction is. For the tires you need to do some math. Someone out the might know the formula to calculate or know the #'s.
Hope this helps and doesn't confuse.
