Title: Buddy's Bowtie Tracker..
Post by: hcgalvin on December 23, 2004, 02:30:16 AM
So, he makes us drive over to his place this weekend, which is a 45 minute drive..

walks us over to his shop, and opens the doors. There's the beast!

But here's the kicker.

He gets in, and turns over the starter. rrrRRRrrrr....rrrrRRRRrrrr... [sound of starter].. rrrrRRRRrrr... VROOM lubbalubbalubbalubbalubbalubbalubba ....

:o and he idles it out of the shop.

(can girls get semis?)

You can't tell, except for the hood pins and the idle.

Oh, he'll be with us in Moab.

Here's lots more shots!!!

SWEET!!!!!  283!!!!!! ;D  I'm sure you've heard the question by now,"Why didn't you drop in a 350?""  Well, let me field that one for ya, You don't need it, a 283's got plenty of snot to move a Tracker around, not to mention it's lighter, better on gas (oh yeah, I'm sure that was WAY up on your list there ;D"  But anyways, nice job.  Have fun at Moab.      Dave

Might even weigh more if the pistons
are smaller in the 283  ;)

I don't remember what it is, but the right
combination of bore/stroke/rods and you
get a 335 that is supposed to be able to
hit 7000 RPM and stay there for the whole
race (circle track)  :o That's some serious
gettin with it

Those flex pics on the logs were posted here before... glad we finally get to see the whole thing... and may I say that I'm drooling over here? :P

Also, if you and the owner don't mind, could ya snap me some interior shots/ask him how much sheetmetal work he did to get the engine and trans to fit in there?

EDIT: I'm obviously blind as a bat, as I missed the shifter pics.  I'm impressed he got it in there with just a body lift and no sheetmetal work.

Look closer at the pics,he did some substancial frame work in the front, welded in a different crossmember, etc.
would love to do this to a x-90, hehehe.
Also can't see in the pics what he's using for a fan?
Must be a electric pusher fan. This in my opinion one of the hardest parts of a bigger engine swap is the cooling system, has to be right, not just good enough.

Yeah, I noticed that, and the body lift. Just didn't know how low that'd make the engine sit.... obviously enough to clear the stock trans tunnel and hood :-/

I don't personally dig the leaf setup, but hey, whatever works.

Cool rig, that is nice!! What are those tires? 33's or 35's?

Yeah, he's still got some work to do.. He's buying new leafs to replace his flat ones, and he'll be getting new custom drivelines made. Right now he's running on a homebrew driveline that he made himself, just so he can test his ride out.

The tires are 35x13.50x15.
He's still pondering what color he's going to paint it when he's all done.

:)

Thanks for all the comments!

Black with flames would really look good. And get one of those tinted window soft tops, would set it off nicely

To answer all your questions.
Why a 283?  I had a built one that a had sitting around.  I built it for street racing and wanted to see how it would work.
What kind of sheet metal work I did for the tranny?   I left the body lift in and I had to modify about 3 inches on each bottom corner of the tunnel.  I just took off the corner tabs.
What kind of fan?  I have a 16 inch fan pushing 3200 cfm.  But let us not forget the radiator. It is a triple core ford radiator.
How does the engine sit?  Since I had to leave the body lift in the engine sites level and the pan for both the engine and the tranny are above the bottom of the frame.  I used the stock mounting points for the tranny and t-case.  I just hade to make all the cross members.
