Title: Update on 97 Tracker will not start
Post by: Capt.Bob on February 13, 2007, 03:41:44 AM
Well I have sent the ECU off and had it checked and they said it was ok. I just put in a new distributer and it still wont start. After I installed the new distributer it ran for about 4 mins. then quit. Now there is no spark at all. I am looking for suggestions to try next.

you check all your fuses? I was blowing an ignition coil fuse due to a faulty O2 sensor. Had no spark.

All fuses are ok.

I had a problem 2 weeks ago when mine wouldn't start...check your battery connections. It turned out that the negative cable was about as chewed up as a dog's breakfast.

Just an idea, and I may be way off, but could it be the rotor pickup module? (If yours has one in the distributor, my '95 does.) I'm new and haven't followed the whole thread but would like to throw out some ideas.

Have you hooked a timing light to #1 plug or otherwise taken it out and verified there is zero spark? Try setting a plug on top of the engine and wire it straight to the coil - any spark now? If you have a voltmeter/DVM, set it to AC volts (20v or so) and measure across the coil primary leads WHILE cranking - do you get some reading now?

If the coil isn't getting any juice, then follow the wiring diagram from the coil backwards and find what it leads to, which is probably an "igniter" module. That could be the problem. Process of elimination! Good luck.

I did a spark test and no spark at all. The igniter module is in the new distributer I installed. I called the place where I purchased the new distributer and they are building me a new one and overnighting it. I will try that.
