i got 6"s in the front doors, and 6"x9"s in the back side panels.

i remade all the interior panels with diamond plate aluminium, and it somewhat gives it a more sealed and stronger enclosure (for speakers).

the 6"x9"s in the back really do pump, including bass wise too. i actually surprised myself with the results.

if i have a free moment tomorrow, i will take and post pics for you.

p.s, i would have opted for front and rear 6" component splits, and a sub or some sort, but as i have a soft top, theft becomes a huge problem, and i have no room either, and another thing, its harder to rip speakers which are bolted to metal and not fibreboard/masonite??? (factory door trims)

and IMO, if you are able/willing, buy or make some 6" front door pods for the front doors, (front of front doors, near feet) and the rear 6x9's will be fine. reason being, the way i mounted my speakers in the door, i can't really distinguish between front and rear, cos they are a bit close to each other. unless you make a pod/spacer for the rear 6x9, you wont be able to mount them way back, and i'm not sure if you have rear seats and rear seatbelt towers either.

oh yeah, and if you want the rear 6x9"s to pump even more, when you remove the panel to mount and cut the speaker holes out, you can line the inside with that sound absorbing foam/material they use in sub boxes.

also if you have the money, you can get a GOOD set of 4" to mount in the front factory positions, only you wont get much bass from it. 2 and 3 way 6"s dont really give much bass either, so if you want a descent front stage, then component splits is the way, unless ur game enough to put 6x9"s in the front....

My '91 Sidekick didn't even have the option for rear speakers, only the two fours in the front.  The previous owner was smart enough to have someone install a pair of 6x9s in the back.  They had put some 100W Kenwoods and they sounded really great over the years.  I finally grew weary of them though because the mesh on them had suffered wear and tear so I got some new 350W Pioneer 6x9s from ebay.     Also the card board panels that hold them in place were falling apart.  There was no solid backing so the screws ate away at that ridiculous cardboard and the speakers kept falling out.

So this past summer I decided to get rid of the stock panels and make some new ones out of about  half inch particle board.  With the help of my girlfriend, I used the old panels as a stencil and cut them out using a hand held jig saw.  I then slopped them with paint to protect them from moisture and wrapped them with speaker carpet.  Screwed them into place in the stock mounting holes using a cordless drill, all done. :D

I'm in the middle of fitting speakers to the back of mine ...

If you stick with the stock location, you can fit 4x6 or 5 1/4" without a problem and probably 6's with a little effort. Plenty of room for 6x9's if you put them where in_flames did. If you pull the rear seat belt pods (and build up an enclosure), 10's could fit back there.

I pulled my rear seats (and belt pods), so I made a masonite panel to extend all the way back (past the stock panels and covers the hole left by the seat belt pods). I'm probably going with 5 1/4" in the stock location and a pair of 6.5" bazooka tubes. (I had the tubes sitting around, and not looking to spend too much $$$).

I have 6x9" in the rear as well. My mounts are in the same location as In_Flames's pics, but I didn't make new panels. I used "J" clips on the cardboard stock panels to hold the screws that hold the speakers...

SONY??? well, i never thought of them as being to high on the quality list, they used to be though. the reason why i chose sony was because it was all cheap cheap, and yes, its the dodgy versions. (ie, not made in japan), and not saying dont get them either.

another reason being my vit gets a lot of mud and water inside and stuff, so something cheap was the way to go. and it just so happens that sony got good prices. i got the speakers (2 sets of 6" and 6"x9"s for $190AUD and the head unit was $180AUD) and its MP3 too.

answer to ur Q? is the 6"x9"s pump, esp in the back with sealed and padded insides (refer to previous post) can't really say much about the 6"s though, pretty average.

if you want something to pump, and loud too, look into pioneer, if you want crystal clear sounds, go clarion, these are in the same market. you can step up a level, and go with the super dooper stuff, thats like rockford, kicker, polk audio etc etc, but now u'll be looking at big $$$. not practical i think.

anyway, just have a look around, and when they test the speakers in the shop on the sound board, don't believe that they'll sound same in your vit/car, its a marketing thing that they do. (they set up in store to sound the nicest, and some have hidden amps powering the speakers..... all to suck you in!)

have fun and good luck.
Steve

I agree with Sikid...although I am a massive Sony fan boy, I hear people say to stay away from the car audio equipment.  Maybe the odd head unit but that's it.

If you want qaulity with cost in mind, Pioneer, Alpine, Clarion and Kenwood are better choices.

Suzuki used to have it's stock stereos built by Clarion.

I had a friend at work once tell me, "You know why Sony calls their line up 'XPLOD'?  Because they explode!"

its either SONY Xplods, or SONY pops, one of the 2.

but seeing as they used to have a name and all, it cant be that bad, but then again, you can't really beat the price.

i'll see how the sony gear goes, and keep you all informed in due time.

question?
those of you with door mounted 6inch speakers, is there enough room in those thin doors to still roll down your windows all the way?

i actually use my door map pockets ALOT and was thinking of mounting just behind the door pockets so if i really needed them still they're still there but my assumtion was the door its self isn't deep enough for 6inchers and still be able to lower the windows all the way.

usually 6" (2way or 3 way) door speakers have a shallow mounting depth for this very reason. with my window rolled fully down, i have maybe half an inch from the speaker magnet to the glass.

as with some component speakers, as in splits, the actual speeker is a woofer and has a larger magnet and requires a deeper mounting depth, such speakers are the Alpine Type S and Type R. to deal with these problems, door pods are used, these are usually where your feet are, at the front of the door, and where your side pockets are, and are angled towards your head.  they also have plain spacers, in half inch, or 1 inch, but be careful, as sometimes there may not be enough room between the door and the seats when doors are closed, and also, you need a bit of space for the sounds/music to circulate and sound descent.

if you need your side pockets, save up for some top end 4" speakers, and place them in the factory positions, and get some 6" SPLITS or some 6"x9"s.

Sony makes some prety good stuff, BUT if your going to WalMart Looking for decent Audio Equipment, YOUR GOING TO GET JUNK!!!!!!!  All they sell is Sonys bottom line equipment. Sony, Just like all other companies sells you what you pay for. I have a Sony Mobile ES 4 Chanel Amp that has been my choice of Amps to run my Mid & Highs through for 3 years now. Good power, crystal clear sound with next to 0 distortion at high volumes. But it was purchased at a High End Audio Shop, NOT WALMART!!!!

Like I said, I love Sony, everything that I own made by them is great, and I'm only passing on what I've heard about there car audio.  I'm sure the higher end stuff kicks ass.

As for room, I was thinking of removing the rear panel off the tailgate and setting up some 8" or 10" subs in there and the amp.  If not there, a unit small enough that I can remove from the little space that there is in the back behind the rear bench when unfolded for rear seat passengers to sit.
