I am in a fued with a co-worker. He has one of those new buttfugly yota fj's. :-X Says he can walk all over me. I say NO! ;D
I told him today after he bought a winch for it that he would need it to be able to follow me. >:D
The only place I see that I need a tad bit of help from is in the HP dept. as the 1.6 8v I am putting in this spring is lacking in power. :(
I am wondering about adding HP to this little engine. I have a few questions about this topic. Before I start throwing out the questions, any one have any ideas that do not include the 1.6 16v?
As a PS add on;
After owning this thing for the last 10+ years, I am now no longer concerned too much about body damage. It used to be a daily driver, I now have a nice Ram truck so the worries are gone.
On the other hand, he just bought the FugJ for his wife. She was not too happy about the broken tail light 3 weeks after they got it. :'( >:( :o :o ;D ;D ;D

your standard mods for the 8 valve include - cam, port & polish, header & 2" exhaust, k&n filter. that should net you about 10 - 15 more hp. do a search in this forum for zaggy's engine build up, it contains lots of good info. i drove a fj when i was at the sema show last year - was not impressed.
derek

I would'nt mind havin' one. If the build quality is anything like the Tundra I owned It's one tuff vechicle. I would be definitely LESS likely to hammer on it till it got to be a few years old though!
-
i think it would be close between the two. i know a guy who is on his second fj already. wrote the first one off ont eh trail. it does have 37" Krawlers on it though. works great out of the box on the trail. as most toyotas do.

I would take an FJ cruser. They are pretty sweet with full width axles, with some nice 37 to 40 inch swampers. They look pretty nice with that set up, but as everyone else said, i would be way to worried about body damage to take it on decent trails.

Yeah, actually, I kinda like the looks of them. One mans treasure- I guess. Just remember- people actually bought the Pontiac Aztek :-\

tell him to bring it to moab and try rusty-nail
-
OK Ross ...so I guess the White Vit and the FJ won't be following your armored Sammy up Rusty Nail.
-
FJ's are capable. Just not as manueverable in tight stuff.
Kicks will outwheel Sammys, generally. Never had a Sammy go somewhere I couldn't. (I know I will hear an ear-full over that statement...lol)
;D
By the way, you don't need horsepower, you need gearing. The 8v will be enough.
A Sammy (granted, it has a 16v) won the obstacle course in Top Truck, finished 4th overall, and would have eaten up the Tank Trap, if the idjits hadn't have run over their own winch line.
The Sammy with the 16v 1.6 was able to pull the Dozer up the hill in the Tow Challenge, sure, it got last place in timing in the Tow, but still, it pulled A DOZER up a dirt hill.
With a competent driver, and a decent set up, a Zuk will compete with ANYTHING off road.

Gary your white vitera would make it . no problem

I guess I should post a little about my ride.
I am set for gearing. I have Rocklobster 4.16 TC gears and 5.12 R&P's along with TT's hybrid rear axle.
I will be installing TT's wrangler spring conversion this spring so the suspension will be covered.
As for the tires, I will be replacing the 32" TSL radial's with either 33" or 35" Boggers. Haven't quite decided yet.
I am looking for more HP just for the incase times. Kinda thinking of NOS for those times I need an instant burst of HP.
Oh, and lets get this back to the subject. No more fj stuff. This is a Zuki board not a fj appreciation board. :-X
;D ;D

That can be really hard on your motor. Derekj put out a good list of mods for your 8v (and you really should check out zaggy's engine build if you haven't already).

As a trail leader at Cruise Moab (sponsored by Toyota Land Cruiser Association), I can say that the FJ is extremely capable. Yes, they've wheeled just about everything at Moab.
Where your Zuk will beat the FJ: Skinny places. Narrow, tight turning places.
Where the FJ will put your Zuk down: Places that require longer wheelbase. Big steps.
I have led FJ40's, FJ60's, FJ80's, FJ100's, 4Runners, Tacos - over Moab Rim - not for the faint of heart. They all pulled through just fine. We wheeled all over MOab with the FJ Cruiser team, and several of our favorite places in Colorado. They are very capable.
Of course, with the Gnewt, they just stand back, and shake their heads, that my little Kick is even capable of getting over some of the stuff I drive like there isn't even an obstacle.
Instead of competing, you should be cooperating, and enjoying the capabilities and the differences of both rigs.

Well said Bob.

i took a 'c' package fj out with the toyota crew for a demo/test/promo something or other and it was quite nice on the trails, the elocker was great. (i have no lockers) didn't do any mud with the crappy stock tires but on the rocks it went well. without the locker i would have said my tracker goes more places but with it they were comparable in the size of things it would go over.. it bottomed out slightly easier than my tracker on the rocks it seeemed but maybe that was because it wasn't mine and i didn't really care about it.

It is not a war, just friendly BS one-up-manship. ;D He is a friend, not looking to make an enemy.
Just who's rig is better. Sure he has a nice capable rig but at $30k+ from the factory, I will have built a nice Zuki for about a third of that. And it is not a belly button rig.
The only thing his rig will do better will be to run down the highway, and that is why I have the Ram and a trailer. If it breaks I can still get home.
And we live in the cascades of the PNW. Lots of tight places around here, not too much in the way of rock crawling in our neck of the woods. That is the reason I am looking for some good power, could use a little extra when the going get's deep.
