Title: timing belt/valve adjusters
Post by: KickTurn on March 01, 2007, 08:57:52 AM
I'm doing a timing belt replacement on a '95 Sidekick 1.6 16 valve, and I'm ready to do the final belt tensioning.  After looking through a couple of factory service manuals, it looks like the valve adjuster screws should be loosened on an 8 valve, but loosening the adjusters is not necessary for the 16 valve.

Sound right?

Thanks.

I didn't have to loosen any valve adjusters on MY 95 1.6/16, when I replaced the timing belt.

Can't see why you would!

What I've read for the 8 valve is that the loosening is to decrease resistance so that the belt can be tensioned correctly.  But I haven't seen those warnings for the 16v.

;) If you got enough miles on it to do a timing belt, you might as well go ahead and check your valve clearances. Can't hurt, and you may find it needs an adjustment.
