ok so i deliver pizza's in my rig. so today i go to get in it on my break and i fire her up but she's struggling. i turn her right back off and try again, but NOTHING! not a click, not a strain to turn. DIDDLY! i can't figure out what the hell it is. im putting a new starter in her this friday. other than that what do u think could be the issue? this is only the 2nd time it's happened in like 3 months. but if i catch her in gear she runs like a champ. so after i pop started her i drove home to pick up my backup ride. turned the rig off and she fired right back up again on first key turn. so what do you all think? dead spot in starter? bad relay? what?

The starter sounds like a definite possibility.
Carry a hammer or something you can rap on the starter with if it happens again. If it starts after you rap on it, then the Bendix gear (I think that's what it's called) is sticking (time for a new starter or rebuild if that's possible with these things).
-
Mine did basicly the same thing with it original starter.  It would usually start if I banged on the starter a bit.  Since I got the new starter no problems with starting. If anyone needs a starter I got mine for $52.00 with shipping from probuilt_starters|removethispart|@yahoo.com. They normally sell on e-bay.
-
mine was doing that to me so i replaced the battery , that worked for a month or so,started doing it again, replaced the battery cables ,ben good for about 6 months now.
-
well everything else worked fine except it wouldn't start *accesory wise* so im getting a new starter for 100 bucks us and then my uncles gonna put it in for me
-
Putting it in is a piece of cake. Took about 10 minutes.
-
Mine did that periodically, replaced factory positive battery cable head, and is fine now. Sometimes I would have to wiggle the cable to get 'er going.
-
but i have no tools, no garage, no lift, and it's been <30 around and WINDY and RAINY all week :'(

Most to all the time, in dealing with a starting issue with little to no crank, the issues deals with electric power. Battery, terminals, cables, relays, electric motor of the starter, etc. Resistance is the biggest problem. Some times is the battery shorting out, others high resistance areas: the terminals, which also leads down into the cables, relays could not be working correctly, and lastly, the electric motor of the starter as it's field windings could have shorted, are dirty, broken, etc. which all leads to resistance.
Start with the obvious. If terminals are dirty, remove and clean with coke, pop, etc. The acid in the soda reacts with the caustic powder on the cables. Rinse with water, dry, and apply battery terminal coating, reinstall. If you have a meter, measure the draw on the battery during starting. Voltage shouldn't drop below 8.5 volts. That's a real good battery against real bad terminals.
-
I would definately check all your connections first. I have a bad terminal on the X-90 and it does it occasionally (once ever few months). I just pop the hood, twist the battery cable to a tighter position, and off I go. I've been planning on puting new cables on but with it only rarely causing problems, I dont think about doing it when I have spare time ::) (that or I'm just lazy :P)

Wait, you can use the factory battery clamps after loosening/tightening them once or twice? :o
;D
Seriously, clamps are something I'd do anyway just for peace of mind... plus I hate, hate, HATE those cheap, crappy clamps.
-
Just because they are strech, bent out of shape easily, and prone to carodeing (sp?) twice as fast as aftermarket ones, why would you not like them ::) ;D

i already replaced the positive one...but it's no go..it wouldn't crank at all. so i think ill replace it just to be safe..i cleaned my terminals a few weeks ago and they look fine...

Corroding ;)

Mine was doing something similar. I would have plenty of juice; I could run the lights and all just fine, but the starter wouldn't even click. Then I would roll start it by catching it in gear and it would run fine and even start normally a few more times before doing it again. Turned out to be a bad starter. I replaced it with a used one from a junkyard for $15 and haven't had any trouble since...

Corroding  ;)
Thanks ;)

Easy fix to all the starting problem... put in a relay. For some reason most of the track/kick out of the factory didn't get enough juice to the starter. I had the problem.. did the tappy with the hammer thing for a while just about to change it to a new one but decided to try the relay.
Been worknig without a problem ever since. Auto start and everything not one time it didn't start.
If you know how a relay works and how to wire it up it'll take like 10 mins tops.

ok well now im having fuel issues. i just dropped the tank today and the tank inside is clean. i dont know wht the problem is sono as i can find my volt meter im going to test the voltage put to the pump and then connect it back up and if it dont' fire..well i got my answer >:(

I feel for ya with the starter problems.  That has been the lone plague for the Lawdog.  I had the same problem, nothing when I turned the key, but I could roll start just fine.  I also found that when it was running I could get the starter to engage and grind.  So the terminals were cleaned.  I worked for a while and then took another dump at Zuwharrie.  There I had to whack it with a hammer.  This was a new starter that I had just dropped $48 bucks on.  So the moral of the story is, as much as the LMS crew has learned about Zuks in general, some problems have to be attacked from all diretions.  Just try everything until the damn thing works again.  Oh, did you check the small wire that tells the starter to engage initially.  Start with that after you have replace the main terminals and wires.  Also check the ground for the starter at the block.  If that fails then replace the starter.  And check that e-mail address that keith posted, or at least shop a couple of parts stores before you shell out 100 bucks for a starter.  Good luck man! Oh, and might I mention that the Lawdog refuses to turn over again. I'm fairly certain it's one of the crappy wires I didn't replace now.
As far as the fuel pump goes, it should make a whining/humming noise when you first turn the key on. If you don't have a meter, listen for that.
-
Lawdog, your new engine wont turn over or your old one? You get it swapped yet? Good luck... ;D
-
the starter isn't the issue anymore..now it's the fuel...and i dropped my whole tank today and looked, it's clean so tomorrow im hardlining my fuel pump to my battery and it it pumps then it's the relay. and if i cant get a relay to work i got me some fancy kill switch custom wiring to do :o

What reasons do you think you have a fuel problem? Whats it doing.. or not doing?

ok well last ngiht after driving about 7 miles and shutting her off for like 15...she started and died right away and wouldn't restart. we couldn't hear the fuel pump pressurize. it ran with ether temp but wouldn't stay running. and today i went down and sprayed a wee bit of ether into the filter and she fired up and actually got me home. while idling in my driveway and listening for the hissing sound of the engine and then moving back to the tank to look for a loose connection she died. idling she just plain out died and wouldn't restart. again we tried and couldn't hear the fuel pump pressurizing. so i dropped the tank and it's clean inside. i grabbed the trusty volt meter and measured power at the relay location and i got 12 volts. i measured in teh back where my connection is for the fuel float. 12-13vlt again. measured the wires for my fuel pump to power...NOTHING! NOTTA! ZERO! not even after i wiggled it around for a while. tomorrow im goign to hardline the pump to the battery and if it starts then it's a wiring issue. if not..then a pump issue. any other advice or things to try while i have the tank down is listened to nicely :D
-
be care full bypassing that stuff, there are safer ways of testing things, you should have a fuse just for the fuel pump, mine has one under the hood I think there are like four large fueses together with a plastic cover over them, start there, next the relays are interchangeable you have two side by side under the dash by the ecm if I remember right by the left speaker, also the ecm has the timming circut for the relay so you have to be cranking the engine to do a relay test, ect.
-
if i were you i would test the pump just hold the wires to the batt. if it works you have relay problems, if nothign happens you need a new pump
-
I beleive the pump only runs intermittently to keep a certain pressure. Once that pressure is reached, the pump shuts off. The Fuel Pressure Regulator or even the ECM might have control to shut off the pump when the right pressure is reached... Hard wiring the fuel pump might cause an overpressure problem...
-
well hardwirie it just to tet to see if the pump works.
-
The fuel pump stays running,(or should)if your bent on by passing the ecm control of the relay, just pull the cover off of the relay and press down on the spring loaded contacs with the ign. on.
-
tested the pump today and it whirred like it should..ordered the relay it should be hear next week soemtime
-
This kinda sounds like what happened to my sister. I wonder if it couldnt be the ecm. :-/
