Title: Samurai Engine, need some help
Post by: Amilla on March 05, 2007, 02:17:41 PM
Iv got an 88 samurai, and the engine is cutting out when ever load is being put on it.
its not the clutch slipping, im pretty sure its a fuel thing.
If im in 1st gear and try to take off a little faster then normal, it hops and lurchs.  Like the engine is cutting out kind of thing.  But if im driving dowe the road in say 3rd gear, and decide to just romp on it will just accelerate smoothly.

It also seems like its loading up on fuel, its backfireing quite a bit.
I already got a new O2 sensor for it, and that smoothed out the idle but nothing to stop the backfireing.

If anyone has some info

any is better than none.

Thanks

Which carb do you have. Also, your wires are all good including the wire to the coil?

I looked over all the wiring and it seemed fine.

anyone else got any ideas?

Maybe the cap. Spark jumping around in it? I had a cap that looked perfect but had a hairline crack that caused a similar problem. Couldn't hurt to swap one out along with the rotor. I also keep an extra coil wire around for test purposes since alot of times you can't see a problem visually.

I had another thought on your engine problem. My old samurai acted like that when the fuel pump was going out. Yours may be weak. I think the suzuki dealer has new mechanical ones for around 40. That's as cheap as I have found for a new with gasket.

all yor plugs and ht leads in good shape aswell as dizzy cap? check your fuel lines they are quite bad for corrosion my sami had a small leak on the corroded line that was hard to see but made engine cut out load bearing at low rpm.

I have just not fixed the problem, and stopped all engine cutting out.

The whole time the only problem was, the wire that goes to the distributer (off the wiring harness) was wraped up and hangin up on the distributer.  Everytime the engine would do a quick rev, the engine would move pulling the wire out then it would kill it, return back to touching together then start again.

Just got done connecting it back together and now it runs beautifuly.

Thanks for all the information and ideas posted.
much appreciated

Thanks
