Title: Mileage with a Diesel Engine in A Trackick?
Post by: Jimiweld on March 18, 2007, 03:12:19 PM
Just wondering what mileage you guys who have put vw diesel engines in your trackicks are getting. I'm wondering if it's a worthwhile trade with gas prices getting so high.

I'd still like to know what mileage people are getting as well as what the torque is like. Do you need to re- gear for 33-35" tires using a diesel engine. Any pro's and con's from someone who has one would be great.
Thanks
Jim

Good Luck trying to find a good Diesel or Turbo Diesel for a conversion. With the popularity of bio fuels all the good engines are being snapped up, if they're not gone already. The available ones are so expensive it's not even worth doing, you could build any number of different configurations, turbo, blower, v6, gas turbine, for a lot less!

I can get a reasonable deal for a vw diesel from a friend right now, I'm more concerned with what to expect to see if it's worth all of the hassle of converting over with increased fuel mileage and torque.

I was wondering about the RPM's of switching to a VW Diesel without dropping the gears with near-stock tires.  Right now I turn over 4K on the freeway, isn't that a bit high for a Diesel?

There isn't much info on Trackkicks with the VW conversion out there...

An early VW diesel in a Track/Kick could make a very slow Track/Kick. 8V Track/Kick is 80bhp/95ft-lbs. N/A VW is 52/71, TD is 59/81. Later TD has much more power and torque. Less of an issue in a Sammy which is much lighter.

That would explain why I don't see any info on the conversion.  :)

I asked the RPM question in this thread and got a response:

Yea, that was with a Samurai though.  Not many people talking about converting a Tracker.  :)

I PM'd another guy on one of the other boards who's selling his Acme adapter kit. I'm hoping that he has some experience with the trackick diesel conversion. If I find any info out I'll post it here.
I like the sound of the wiring for the diesel "SIMPLE", that suits me just fine. thanks for the link Gravity_Storm.
