Title: Remove t case
Post by: 96Kicker on March 20, 2007, 10:46:21 AM
Ok I just got my Trail Tough T case Gears(4.24.1) in the mail for my tracker. My question is do I need to remove the tranny and t case as a whole unit? Or can I seperate the t case from the tranny with the tranny in the vehicle?(remove t case only) Ive searched and havent found anything. I do have a 3 inch body lift if that matters or helps.
Oh I would like to see what size tires people are running with this set up in a 5 speed with 5.12's diffs too.

I've not done this but a couple of people have told me that they have. Its much easier if you have a bodylift. You need to remove the shifter assembly to get at the top bolt.

What I did was remove the tranny mounts put it on a jack lower it down and then un bolt it. Is it a five speed if it is you will need to pull the shifter top off to remove one of the bots that holds it to the tranny.

I removed the t-case and left the trans in the car.  it was light enough to where you really don't need a jack.  You do need to remove the top of the trans. to get the upper bolts on the t-case.  It's pretty easy to do though.

The top bolt between the tranny ant the xfer case is UNDER the shift housing.

You have to drop 'em both, remove the shift housing, then separate them.
When you put them back together DO NOT RE-INSTALL THE TOP BOLT.
This will allow you to drop just the xfer case in the future.

That's my story, and I'm sticking with it.
Dropping the tranny is the hardest part of this mod.

Bobzooki,  I have seen folks take the shift housing off while the tranny is in the truck.

Did you find otherwise?

Dropping the tranny itself isn't that hard at all. Just cumbersome. The hardest part is getting it back in. And that's not that hard either. Just cumbersome. This will be a good time to clean the outside of the tranny off real good if you're particular like me, and if you think you'll need a clutch in the near future (depending on how many miles are on the one you have), you  may as well do that too. The thing I don't like about dropping the tranny is having to drop the exhaust too. Sometimes you run into some rusty bolts. I also ran into a stripped bolt going into the exhaust manifold (m10x1.25). Those are pretty easy to strip if you're not careful.

Thanks for the helpfull hints. ;D
