Title: Were to get steel housing?
Post by: chriskid74 on December 26, 2004, 04:31:09 AM
I know about the Anvil, didnt get it for Christmas though. Does anyone know were I can get a steel housing for a 94 5 spd Tracker? Any input would be greatly appreciated. My Tracker is for sale now because of this front end issue. I dont want to rid of it cause it does awesome. But this front end has been replaced at least 10 times. Its driving me nuts. I dont have alot to invest right now and just want to know my options. Thanks.

Read over some of the options in the article archive (in screen footer line), under technical; Brentwood, TN and San Diego, CA are 2.

Brentwood speaks of using a Anvil axle housing, XL7 diff housing (3rd member) (mounting mod required), 5.83 gears, mod'd Sami carrier, EZ locker, 26-spline shafts required.

San Diego speaks of using a XL7 axle housing (steel), a GV diff housing (3rd member), 5.83 gears, mod'd Sami carrier, EZ locker. No mention on the shaft requirement, though probably 26-spline.

Pity I'm in New Zealand or I'd give you the one I have sitting on my bench as Santa will be dropping off my Anvil once Calmini have some more in stock ;)

I just had a quick search in google looking for "grand Vitara parts US" and theres a quite a bit available you might just  have to spend some time contacting some of them till you locate one. Also try http://www.hawksuzukiparts.com/ they might have one  or know where to find one.

I found down here that the G/V steel housing attracts a premium price seems they all know why you need it, but I managed to get mine down to a reasonable price.

Good luck

10 times! You could have bought an anvil 2 by now! :o Nobody wants to spend the money but wheeling just isnt cheap. That housing is the weak link. If ya wanta play your gonna have to pay. The steel GV housing isnt cheap either. It costs almost as much as the anvil. Why not just do it right.

using stock parts

Damn thats cheap! Start selling them for 100 each and buy an Anvil! ;D Honestly the GV center allong with the Anvil is really tough. I know of a couple of people running this without a single breakage.

How would you prevent this from happening?

It starts, or feels like where it starts, at the very top rib support. Then comes across the beginnings of each rib, then goes down the curvature of the housing. It actually grew with the hubs locked in and t-case in 2wd. I'm debating about going to the Anvil, however, I don't think there is enough room. I barely had enough for a toothbrush to clean as best as I could before applying some JB Weld.

I haven't done it yet, but according to the guy in Brasil
that did this mod, it solved his breakage, I have been
thinking about doing this to the extra 3rd member I,
have, but I have yet to break a 3rd or a housing, go
figure, I run Turbo and 33 Swampers.........

So what's your problem  Chriskid ???
;)
Just funnin ya

This is funny.   This is exactly what we did with our first broken housing.

I have been running the Anvil and the XL-7 diff fir some time now with no problems out of it. And I treat my Kick very rough on the trail. It is a mod that will be one of the FIRST things I do when I build another one ;)

Mine usually breaks at the bolts on the passenger side. It cracks were the bolts go into the aluminum. Or sometimes were the single bolt mounts near the drive shaft. I guess I know were my income tax checks going this year. Thanks Guys.

For the 3 or 4 bolt mount on the Pass side,
get that hollow section welded up full with
aluminum, it greatly increases the strength.

I know this is all bandaid stuff for the aluminum
diff housing, but these mods have worked for
me and kept the stock housing in the trucklet
for 275,000 miles, yes that's right, I never have
changed the origional front housing, and I would
probably never broke one of the bolt holes on
the Pass side if I had kept them tight, and filled
it in before it broke.

Last time the housing was out to fix my oil pan leak,
I put the longest bolts that would fit into the housing,
almost touching the center section with one, deeper
the better hold the bolt has, and the less likely to
break the aluminum.

I`m going to put an aluminum housing in one more time. Just because of cash. So I`ll try to brace the new one. I did notice the bolts come loose also. Would Locktite work for that? I`ll keep you guys posted how it goes. Thanks again.

Loc-Tite helps, last time I did this, I
got all new bolts, and the lower bolt was
longer than the others, I used extra long
bolts for the top that go all the way thru
to the hollow cavity on top of the diff

And the other one was just poking thru
to the inside of the opening where the
3rd lives, it can't poke thru much or the 3rd
will hit and not go in.

I used Loc-Tite and assembled the bracket
and the bolts before I installed the diff, torque
them and make sure to use washers or washered
bolts, the more surface the less it will want to
move, I wish I remembered the size of the lower
bolt (length) but I'm just guessing it's 45mm

Weld up the hollow between the 3 bolt holes,
and add some gussets to the rear ear on the
3rd to help prevent breakage, and don't dump
the clutch in reverse, that's a good way to break

I just noticed that the 3 bolt holes in the Calmini bracket on the passenger side arent exactly round anymore.  :'( Do you think this is a big deal?  ???  I have my sway bar hooked up now, does this help at all? The first time I broke a housing I was reversing up a hill, you wont catch me doing that again. The only other thing I`ve broke was 2 rear axles.

If they aren't round, they have been loose,
it could be a problem, keep those bolts tight.
I suggest getting the longer new bolts like I
said in the previous post
