Title: Sammy questions
Post by: mbmarkyb on December 23, 2004, 05:55:04 PM
Hi,  I wanted to get some information on the sammy front axle if I may.

Anybody running 33" tyres or bigger

1, If any what breakages do you have?

2, how long do the bearings/burfields last

After my kick/vitara goes through bearings and front drive line components a lot i am looking to convert the front to live axle on coils.

I am limited as I have an  ARB that will fit into a front sammy axle so i will be leaving my stock rear axle in place. as normall its low budget so i need to use whats around to keep the cost down

Any information will be great before i dive into this conversation

I'm running 35's on my sammi and no breakage yet, and so far I've been Making It Hert for a little over 6 months. I believe that with 33's everything will work out fine, it's nice when people see the ways of the solid axle ;D. All the bearing and stuff are fine, birfields are fine, but it also matters your tires, For 35's my tires (Dunlop Mud Rovers) are pretty light!

I run an 88 samurai with a sixteen valve and 4 to 1 low range with 33" type mud tires like a bfg mt, and so do a couple of friends of mine. no probs so far, you have to be careful about stuffing the tire into your fender or getting on it while haveing the wheel turned sharp to one side, other than that no probs yet! oh ya my friends have only broken two front axels in three years or more of heavy off roading.

Sami axles can live with 33s. If you have open diffs.  If you're locked up, it's only a matter of time before they break. I know.

Risk it anyway, it will give you a reason to get toy axles

I will prob. get the axels from roadless gear be for I go to toys, I have too much money into mine to change them, plus I like the light weight of the samurai for snow, gas mileage, and for driving the speed limit with out being floored all of the time. and my other rigs have the same five lug pattern wheels.

cheers for all the responses.

I think the sammy axle is stronger than the stock tracker setup so im doing a converstion over the next 2 months will post back.

things i have to help in strength is a 26 spline ARB and 26 spline shafts , I will use my callipers discs and i need to measure up what shocks springs to use.  I will be leaving my calmini rear setup in place so not looking for lots of travel on the front just a reliable axle with simular travel to the rear standard calmini 3 inch setup.
