I have a 1998 4door 2wd Tracker. Is it really as easy as everybody says, to convert it to 4wd. I am thinking about finding an old junked out or wrecked tracker/sidekick and using it to convert my tracker. Is there any welding involved?

Welding?
Nope.. just parts swapping.
Tranny
xfer case
front axle assembly
front spindle/hubs
Driveshafts
mounts, etc....
All the mounting holes should be there.
Lots of work, but pretty straight forward.

I don't think the mounts for the front 3rd member/axle assembly are there on a 2wd chassis (the tabs to mount the center section) and would need to be fabricated. Please confirm, over...

hmmm, the holes for the diff mount were on the 2wd tracker I looked at, but I honestly didn't check for the front two mounts....
I wonder if it varied according to year? I was looking at a 89 I believe.
Does anyone know for sure, now I am VERY curious.

Don't really know anything about this coversion, but wouldn't you have to change out the ECM too? Isn't there a difference between the 2wd and 4wd one?

I drive a 95 tracker that was 2WD everything is just unbolt and swap, except the diff mount right behind the steering box ( have to cut off the 4WD and weld to the 2WD, but pretty minor) as for the ECU there's no problem as long it's 5 spd to 5spd or auto to auto.
The 4WD light is even in the 2WD cluster, you just have to hook it up. Don't know about all years but I know 94-95 are the same and need the bracket welded on.
The gears in mine were the same to so I didn't even touch the rear end ;D

ah yeah, that is one of the two I didn't check.
OK, I stand corrected... it should have been:
Welding? yep, but just a little...
