Well, I just got tired of dreaming of the day that I could afford $300 Fender flares... So I made some myself...
(pt.1)
First, remove stock flare and plastic hardware.
Second, cut off the lip of stock flare from the inside with a cut-off wheel and clean it up.
Third, cut 5" garden trim to size and remove any flaps or anchors from the trim.
Fourth, place speed nut onto mounting position on the flare.

Continued
(pt.2)
Fifth, position the flare into the body groove and line it up.
Sixth, place screws into speed nuts and tighten them mostly down.
Seventh, recheck alignment and make sure the flare is setting correctly.
Eighth, go ahead and tighten them all down.
Ninth, following stock flare angles, trim the garden trim to reflect body lines
Tenth, repeat three other times and enjoy!!!

(pt.3)
Items needed:
Materials:
5" plastic garden trim (found at Home Depot or Lowes)
Stock fender flares
Tools:
Phillips screw driver
Razor knife
Cut off wheel
Hammer (you never know...)
Hardware:
#8x1 phillips black trim screws (Napa Auto)
#8-18 screw size speed nuts (Napa Auto)
Time:
This job could be tackled in a couple of hours at a turtles pace!!!

those turned out pretty nice.
-
$20 dollar investment!!!
-
That's so ghetto! (I think that's the phrase)
Looks good and you can bet someone else is going to do it. Maybe a couple pictures from a little distance so we can see more how they look?

I will get a couple of poser shots!!! But until then... here is another...
-
Pretty sweet, but I am not going to deal with mine, until I yank them off, and make an exo skeleton! But that is WAY down the road!
-
Ok, here is a few more shots... An idea I have to finish these up is going to be to calk the seam of the trim and flare, then spray bed liner on them to see if I can get a 1 piece appearance from them and maybe a cleaner look...
I also should add that I placed the trim all the way against the body... If one needed them to be wider, they could pull them out an inch to an inch and a half...
If anybody does this DIY Insta-Flare, please post and share the results!!!

You know, I was expecting something extremely ghetto looking, but I'll be honest with you, those don't look too bad at all ;)
What size tires and what lift do you have on that? I'm in the process of painting mine that same color.
-
I am running 33 x 12.50 r15 I have a jpeater front and a prototype rear using XJ leafs!!! It is a great ride!!! I will repost on this when I bed line them to make'em look one piece... won't get to this until after Moab...
-
I can't see the picts it just says file not found! They must be out to lunch!
-
I just clicked it and it brought it up...
For saving me 300, they look like a million bucks!!!
-
I just pulled em off and sprayed em with bed liner... I will put them back on and calk them and bed line over that.... we will see it they look any better....
-
Another idea... Use one big mud flap from six states 18 wheeler type, cut off everything, rip flap into four equal sections use grabber screws to attach them, after some fancy table saw trimming (im a finish carpenter) these look pretty good and take a beating ive rolled this on its side twice and slid 20 feet once in the snow, once on pavement, not even a scratch.. heres some pics...
Ok dont laugh they looked better when i first did them, i guess my rattle can job has faded
and dont you dare laugh at my broken front bumper,or my hidden licsence plate its an unfinished project at this point
-
And yes i am about to crawl that huge rock in front of my tire!!
-
I like Jerry's better because they have the rib in it that helps it keep the round shape. Lost Samurais might have looked alot better prior to all the miles and sun beating on them but you can't tell now. Either way, it's cheaper than the $300 kit.

-
Just needs more screws, a bigger hammer, and a can of paint, mine are two years old, lets see if jerry's make it in the long run, they do look good though jerry thubs up.
-
They are real plyable... and look great with the bedliner!!!
-
Looks very clean - thanks for writeup!
-
nice DIYer
-
look good the only thing i see that might improve them is to take them of and fiberglass them together but the look awsome either way
-
i think they look great, i make damn good money, but i can't seem to justify 300 bones either, especially with X-mas so close, so.... i'll probably be the one to copy ya jerry ;) i'll post pics when i get 'em done... ;D
-
I love that idea.I have been building firetrucks and strange stuff for 20 years, and make good money, and still won't pay 300 for rubber flares.
If you can build it why buy it?It has to satisfy no one but you.
-
I think the it's got a catchy name. :P It's been sticking in my head since I started looking at bigger tires. :o I have every intention of building these myself as soon as my wife let's me do the lift. ;D

Here is how mine turned out. I did them a little different and in a rush 30 min before I went on a trip. I used garden edge stuff 1in blocks of wood and some sheet metal screws. I screwed the 1 in blocks under the factory flares then I screwed the edging to the wood.

I'm usually picky about things but for $15 and 30min I think it looks good enough.

Hey, Those look Great... You just saved yourself a small fortune....
at the carwash...
at being unavoidably detained...
at spending 400 on aftermarket flares...
Thanks for the post!!!

Less time at the car wash is good but it sure is a lot of fun to pull into the girls high school field hockey fund raiser car wash covered in mud. :P Thanks girl here is your dollar.
