When I put my samurai together I am planning to put a roll cage into it. Does anybody have any input on the ones that you can buy on the net, like the Calmini, or the davesport? is there other good ones around? I am planning to cut the body off behind the doors too. The Calmini concerns me because it bolts together. I won't be needing a back section, but if it has bars that extend downward into the back I could make some supports to them. Has anybody ever had a cage made, what kind of cost would I be looking at there?
Thanks
Andrew

I know a guy who can build them but your back east and Im on the west coast. too much to ship. I can do tube doors though ;D
Thanks

Try Jegs,http://www.jegs.com I know they have a bunch of cages and kits.

The ones at calmini and other places like it arent roll cages but sport cages meaning that if you were to compete it would not be allowed. Now i dont know if want to compete or if you just want a nice cage but if not a precut/prefab cage would be just fine for weekend wheeling and driving around town.
Now as for tubing the back we did this to a sammy a while back and just caging the cab is NOT a good idea. you really want to put bars that bolt/weld from the cab to the end of the frame and the put some sort of gusseted angle bars goind back to a support bar behind the cab. This is the strongest design, but it you want to do a flat bed sort of thing then you could work with it but if you want strength then doing the 45 bar idea is good.
I have made about 8 cages for different vehicles 2 for sammies and on both just the material was about $40. This is of course with shop discount but you want to use minimum of: 1/12" .120 wall DOM or HREW tubing. And then there is also paying for wire and gas and weldor time if you dont have one available.

Heres some cage work, although its on a fullback sammy you get the idea, this one was done by TatorZuk

This is the custom cage they built for me. He does really nice work and the prices are right. He has been in business for 2 years or so. Give them a shout and ask for Scott. He's a madman with a bender ;D

Awesome cage !! Pity there's no-one here making these cages ( Netherlands, Europe ), been Emailing with Ray at RhinoRays in England to come over for a short holiday in Brighton and put the Sammi in his garage and have him make me one of his exo-cages. Might do that somewhere next spring ( saw a nasty roll-over happen this weekend at an OffRoadevent and would really like a caga !! )

I had mine made up by a local guy in the UK, he pretty much did it how i wanted it to look even aloowing me to open my roof. I helped along the way and it took some doing as we were keeping to the competion regs. 40mm cold draw seemless steel, here are some pics

sorry about the size
hope that give you an idea

It does, thanks.
How about the connection with the sidebars, I understood it's wise not to weld the cage to the sidebars but have it slide over slightly smaller upright tubes on the sidebars so there's no ( how do I put this in English ? ) "stress" on the chassis/cage? I saw on Ray's site he does that as well, bolting the cage to the sidebars. The guy I talked to last month had the cage lose on the tubes on the sidebars and bolted to the bed and the piece of metal just in front of the windshield.
I'd like the rearsection to mount to the rearbumper just on the outside corners so I can still use the kid covering the bed ( still have to make th ererabumper, keeping that plan in mind )

i see what your saying , mine bolts through the chassis in 4 places the chassis used to move but not anymore its kind of braced the opposite way. the side bars are made out of the same tube as i had them made into rock sliders at the same time
One job for next year is to brace acorss too but thin gauge stuff to keep the weight off.
Yours will be sorted once you have all the ideas and get it made up.

I picked up the Davesport cage and it bolted in fine. The only problem is my Bestop Fastback top won't fit any more due to the bar being a bit further back. :D
It doesn't bolt to the frame stock, but I am going to mod it a bit. I haven't fliped the vehicle yet, but dropping my SJ on it's side didn't seem to tweak it much at all.

I really like that rock 4x fabrication cage, unfortunately that isn't too local to Vermont. I'd imagine shipping would be kind of ridiculous. I'm going to look around here for places that make them, we have some small local circle tracks here so there must be somebody who builds decent cages. But keep the pics and websites coming.

Shipping isn't bad........ if you can weld. He ships it in pieces, then you assemble it. I think it is less than 100 bucks to ship it via freight. Come to think of it, way less

does anyone knwo if they make thes for track kicks? (http://www.rock4xfabrication.com/images/tubefront/tube1.jpg)

You guys are funny just need to ask.. Yes we ship globaly I have shipped tube clips to guam and cages to Hawaii.. Our cages are all 100% prenotched and fitted before they ever leave the shop. shipping cost between $60-$100 depending on location we have shipped to dam near every state..
as far as tube clips for the Kicks we should be getting a kick in mid Jan for mockup of new product. I was hoping to get it earlyier this year but with time constraints and some pretty big jobs that came into the shop we just didnt have the time... As far as designs we will build anything you can draw with in reason.. or at least describe

I was planning to send you guys an email, just hadn't gotten there yet. I noticed on the website you say you can have just a front portion of the cage based on the existing roll bar, I don't think I really want to trust that bar so would it be possible to build something that has a new main hoop but only goes to the front? I am planning to cut the back area off mine due to rust, I would kind of like to run some diagonals from the main hoop to the rear frame though.
-
Yes we can make a new rear B-hoop if so desired. Just FYI the stock B-hoop is 2" .090 wall tube and generaly a pretty stout pc. once you add on to it. Most circle trac cars are made from .090 wall 1.5" just for a comparison.
Basic front  A-hoop dash bar and 4 spreaders would be $295 the new b-hoop would be additional. Weather you buy from us or some one else do your homework. Find out exactly what is involved with other cages, do you have to trim notch or fit any of the competitions bars. Ours you do not do anything but weld. All cages are built in a stock straight zuk. If you would like any testimonails just ask and i can hook you up with the contacts or ask on the pirate4x4.com. zuwharrie.com or offroad.com and they will let you know what we have done and can do. we dont specialize in off the shelf replicas. Allthough we do have a few standards, most of our stuff is one of a kind hence the price, as stated before we will build anything within reason and have the capability to do so.
We have a 2300 sq ft facility which houses all our CNC machinery and tubing benders, soon to be added hopefully this yr will be a new waterjet and torch table.. anyway feel free to call and discuss the designs you want to look at doing. Even if you dont purchace from us I will gladly talk with you about what to look for in cage..
happy holidays

I find the price to be quiet reasonable, and the quality looks number 1 to me. I think I am going to have to do my body mods to the rear tub before I decide on anything, or if I am going to cut the tub off at all. Just somethings to ponder for awhile. In my area here in Vermont lots of people are into racing as there is a circle track close by, so I am going to look around here to see what can be bought and prices too.

I have a DAVESORT and it says its approved for everything , whatever that meansto me the front hoop would have been fine because the stock roll bar is bigger . but just the front hoop doesnt give you approval for everything , but you can still use your stock tops , you know the 3 piece. its way cheaper that the full cage and easyer to install but still requires welding . I got mine from rocky road , I believe the full sport cgae was 75 for shipping 500 for the cage ..
