Title: REMOVABLE CAT CONVERTER
Post by: CANADIAN on April 18, 2007, 09:40:49 PM
HOW GOES IT

I am just wondering if anyones running a removable cat converter?

I ran into a guy that was running the set-up on a 1991 2-door 1.6 8V.
Apparently he just unbolted it, before going off-road!

Anyways drop me a line

THANKS

If you want to be able to remove your cat,

weld a 3 bolt flang on eaither side of you cat then onto the joining peices of exhast tubing.

Then for what ever reason you want to remove your cat for you can remove it then put bolt in some tubing that has flanges on it to.  I have seen people doing this, im not to sure why.  I guess there thinking ahead to if they are ever going to sell it, so they can put it back in.

Does removing the cat give more power? I'm in california, so I'd need to put it back in every couple years.

If you get a high flow cat it shouldn't affect anything.  If you do drive a lot on-road, you should have a cat on.  It really does help with the environment.

If your off-road only you can usually just hollow out the cat and keep it in place so it looks proper.  :P

I work in the environmental field (imagine that?) and do a lot of CAA compliance work.  If the Dems win, and no Dem will win without Al Gore's backing, they will push and pass a lot of new global warming regs.  Currently, the admin is against the plan for tail pipe testing for all autos, regardless of age.  "Some" want tail pipe sniffing for all states, and will accomplish this with a requirement that a statye follow the fed plan, or opt out and loose all federal highway funding assistance.  The did it this way back in the 70's with the 55mph law to reduce fuel consumtion.  Gore made no rebuke to wanting all pre-Cat year cars off the road, regardless of collector status, if they can't meet current standards.

thats cool....gotta love our polititions, huh, guys??

i know that untill then...im gonna rip the cat off of every vehicle i own.....gotta whole slew of them too, i might add....it has made HUGE improvements to driving and fuel mileage on all of my cars....98 saturn sc2 *turbo*, 90 dodge dakota, 95 tracker 16v, and the wifeys 01 grand prix gtp....i know it isnt as "enviromentally friendly" as having a cat. but neither is half the world smoking a pack a day...there's TOXINS in that smoke too....what about tractors?? weed whips?? lawn blowers?? lawn mowers?? forklifts?? motorcycles?? atv's?? pressure washers?? generators??....these are things that millions of people use everyday, and they are definatly not "enviromentally safe" still nothing regulating these other than the day they were brand new?? no engine is safe...they all cause global warming....its going to be a huge problem down the road....but why worry now?? the damage is already done, cant be reversed...shoulda worried about it in the 1960's before the musclecars, and hotrods, and unefficent motors were around!!

i also think that if they try to take all of the pre-cat vehicles off the road, they are going to be opening a whole bucket of worms, so to speak....i can think of quite a few musclecar orginazations that would probably have a bit of a problem with that....and im sure they also have some strong political followers to boot....old guys love muscle cars....they cant stop them from driving them, that just isnt right....so untill i see some B.S. telling me that im going to get a emissions test, im going to smoke my pack a day, and RIP them CATS OFF my cars.....

BAAHHH...like i said!!

That my friend was beautiful :'( , now you make me want to smoke two packs per day, and run my generator, just because I can ;)  (just kidding im not THAT much an ass) And yeah, I have the "dissapearing" cat syndrome on my '02 tundra, and I must say, easily got an extra 3-4 mpg's !!!!  and the day someon says "put it back on, its bad for the enviorment" I'll probably have some smart alek remark towards stuff they do ;D (what im still teenager, give me a break)

I have worked in the exhaust biz for more than 10 years, so I am pretty up on the emissions laws. Emissions requirments are based on the number of "bad air" days a county has in a year. If a county continues to have bad air days year after year, emmisions requirements continue, and sometimes even tighten. In my county, we have only had 2 bad air days in the last twelve years, so as of January 1st of this year, we no longer have any emmisions requirements. No E-tests to get a vehicle registered, no more bogus exhaust violation tickets, nothing.

I think almost everyone i know that has tried it has puked, takes some people a couple of times befor they stop puking.

To solve the pollution problem in the US, people just need to put there cats back on, and start chewin...
Sounds crazy enough that it just might work!!  ::)
