Title: Bigger Gas tank

I am sick of dinging the underside of my gas tank, so I thought I would make a skid plate, then I thought I should make a heavy duty tank that is also a better shape to help clearance.  But i don't what metal to use so that it doesn't rust. I am thinking stainless steel, but that's just to expensive.  Would painting a mild steel tank be ok?

How about powdercoating it? 
I dont think it would cost an arm and a leg to do, much more durable than paint to.

you can buy a 15-gallon fuel cell at Petroworks.
