Title: Help with my calmini 4.16:1 gears!
Post by: MariaLynne on April 25, 2007, 09:51:43 AM
I was wondering if anybody knows anything about the Mystery 2lo shifter in the calmini gears. I just bought a Samurai with a 4.16:1 calmini gear transfer case and it does not shift into 4hi and lo like a normal sami would. There is like a "mystery 2lo" and if i somehow find 4hi or lo it takes forever to find 2hi again, or I just can't plain find 4hi or lo. Hopefully somebody can help me out!

Is it an H pattern shifter?  If so you need to put it in High/Low first, then 4 or two wheel drive... or is it the other way around...

A club member has one, I have no idea how it works.  :P

Why don't you just call Calmini?

Probably because he isn't having problems with the CALMINI gears, rather the 2LO shift conversion is probably home-built or was installed incorrectly.  He should find the supplier of the 2LO conversion he is running and call them.

Yep, thats the problem. somebody has modified the shift rails. A couple of our club members have had the "mystery shifter" in their samis. I think they have all converted back now because of this problem.

Could be that its not an aftermarket 2wd lo kit but the home brew version that involves the removal of a ball bearing. I forget the details but I do recall that the shift pattern isn't very user friendly.

If it is the simple "removal of the center detent ball method"....then you should still have the regular shift pattern (unless the shifter sheet, or something else, is messed up), and also a "special" shift pattern to get it into and out of 2L.  If somehow you got it into 2 low and are not using the correct pattern to get it out of 2L, then all the stick will do is move back and forth (it will be 2L in the "forward" position, and 2H in the "rearward" position)......if you move the shifter half way between 2L and 2H, then move it to the left to catch the "sweet spot" you can get it out of 2L.  What you need to do to get it in or out of 2L is move the shifter halfway between the far right and far left position and catch both shift rails......then move the stick forward or backward (you can feel the gap between the shift rails when moving the stick left and right, if you put slight pressure forward (when going into the 2L pattern) or rearward (when shifting out of the 2L pattern) on the stick).
I'll try to post a few pics that explains what I am trying to say.  The pics show how the shifter needs to be shifted to go in and out of 2L.  I'll also post a pic of what the regular shift pattern looks like in comparison.
Ok, the first pic is the regular tcase shift pattern.  The second pic shows how to shift into and out of the 2L position.  The third pic shows what the pattern looks like, once you get into the 2L position.

You could also have the "H" shift pattern (PetroWorks, I think).
You could also have the "reverse S" shift pattern (Rocky Road, I think).
You should be able to check on either of their websites and it will explain how the shift pattern should work.
