Just bought a 87 sam. I put the transfer case in neutral and used a tow bar to tow it home. Now at home the transfer case will not come out of neutral. I start it up work the clutch , place it in gear , rock it ,noting seems to work. When I look at the drive shafts both turn (front and rear together) when the vehicle moves but the trans will not engage. Before I towed I placed the trans in gear and moved the transfer case shifter until the vehicle moved freely. Did I not have it neutral when I towed it?

sounds like the shifter sheet is bad. pull the shifter and check it out

Did a search and found some go info. I pulled out the shifter aligned the notches and she is moving now! When I pulled out the shifter there was no sheet.

the sheet is a polyurethane or rubber bushing under the shifter

I would have guessed the shifter sheet also. People have been known to pick up Samurais dirt cheap because the shifter sheet has gone bad and the owner thinks that there is a major transfer case problem!

you can pick them up at most of our zuk suppliers for 12 to 15 bucks.
do like i did and buy two. throw one in your tol box in your rig for a spare.
sucks when it goes bad on the trail .
