I want to install 235 75 15 tires ,what is the best lift for the 87 sam? I will be driving on the road about 80% of the time. How about a 4" Hell creek spring lift? If I go with after market rims how much back space is needed. Thanks guys

Hey there,
I used the Hell Creek kit on my last Sammy. It's a quality kit, but it is VERY stiff, no flex what-so-ever. The springs are so heavy duty that I actually got about 5" of total lift! This is much more than you need to run 235's. I was running 31X11.50 Super Swampers with plenty of room to spare. But like I said, they are way too stiff and perform terribly on or off-road. It was literally like the axles were hard-mounted to the frame with solid bars of steel. They also don't include anything to correct the steering angle after the lift, leading to very significant bumpsteer. No brake lines either...
I just bought my next Sammy, an '88, and am going to run 235's with Rough Country add-a-leafs(1.5"-2" of lift) and 1" longer shackles(0.5" lift) to soften the ride from the added springs. The added 2"-2.5" will give plenty of room for 235's, and I am guessing this set-up will be much better off-road than the Hell Creek kit. Cheaper too, it will be less than $200 for everything whereas Hell Creek is $300 just for the springs or $550 for the whole "kit"(with shipping, brake lines, and z-link or pitman arm it will be well over $600).

How about a body lift? It will give you the clearence for those tires and as you will be mostly on the pavement you do not need to worry about all the other lifts. Add some 1" or 2" shackles and gain a tad bit more lift. Be ok for a pavement pounder, have about the same ride as stock also.

here is mine with 2 inch lift shackles and 235/75/15's
no body modifications other than bumper removed for towbar.
