Hey all,
I have had a few Samurais in the past, but have never left them alone long enough to see what a stock one does for fuel mileage(they have all been lifted with serious off-road tires within the first week or two of ownership!). What kind of mpg are you guys with stock or mildly-built Sammys getting?

I WAS getting 16-17, but then again my wasnt so hott when I bought it, burned oil, sputtered and the work (basically I'm rebuilding now after owning it for about a week!!) but I know some guys that get up aroung the high 20's low 30's with a stock setup, one size up tires (235/75 I wanna say, but cant remember for sure) and a weber carb. Plus they were all fairly "old" guys so they werent exactly leadfooting around town. hope I helped in some way.

Way back when I had a stock '87 Sami, it would do 25 MPG as a daily driver in warm weather, and about 22 MPG in the winter (in 2wd). I didn't use 4wd enough to check the mileage in 4wd.

my stock 87 got about 25-28 MPG, after lift 31x10.5's all stock it went down to 22-25
My motor was well taken care of by previous owner..
my 88.5 got 18-22, then 16-20 lifted on 31x10.5's

I don't understand how a guy with a weber and over size tires can get upwards of 30 and you barely got 18-22 mpg. I'm guessing that alot of guys are running out of tune or with vacuums, sensors, or switches wrong. There sure has been a broad range of mileage reported in this forum for samurais.
Personally, I was getting around 22 in the winter and around 25 right now. I got 27 mpg a couple weeks ago when it was really warm. I know for a fact that my vacuums aren't quite right and for all I know, some of the switches are bad. My ecm may not even be working.

the first tank i ran in my '87 was 17mpg. this second tank appears to be doing better, MAYBE low 20's, but i know theres something wrong with mine. just wish i knew what!

Yeah, there really does seem to be a broad range of fuel economy. The last Samurai I had averaged exactly 20mpg with 4.5" of lift and 31x11.50 Super Swampers(stock gearing). I just bought an '88 that I don't plan on building quite as much, probably 2" of lift and 235's with a milder A/T or M/T tread. I am hoping to get a little bit better with this one...

I have been getting about 20 or 22 with a pluged up EGR, warped intake, and header, and loads of incorrect vac lines. But i just got all that stuff fixed and im dying to see if the mileage improved at all.
When i spring it up and gear it down, if the mileage drops.
I guess i could throw a spoiler on the old sammy, maybe get a few more poneys out of it as long as some better mileage... ::)
