Title: Tube doors started
Post by: MKOLSEN22 on May 03, 2007, 12:57:11 AM
Well I finally broke out the tube bender again and started a new project. Tube doors for the Tracker was the order of the day. I just started on this project, but I'm pretty happy about how it is turning out so far.

Just a couple of notes. First the material is 1" square tube bent in my Pro Tools 105 bender with a 6" CLR die. I think that I will lower the top tube so that the horizontal part of the tube follows the body line between the front fender and rear quarter panel. I still need to source some new latches so I'll probably end up surfing the Austin Hardware catalog.

Enjoy the pictures!

p.s. I might lower the lower rear corner , we'll just have to see.

Are you going to cover them?  What type handles you going to use, something like soft top hummer?

I'll probably have some sort of skin on the doors.  Still need to decide just what I will use and what design I'll have.

Looking good, cant wait to see them done. The non-straight front axle and the ability to look good with the doors off are the only things I dont like about my kick versus a Sami.

Well on Monday I was cleaning up my little work area and had to start picking things up. Well there was all of this tube kicking around on the floor so I decided to pick it up, weld it up and then bolt it up to the Tracker.

I don't have the latches yet but I think that I'm ready for them now, what do you think?

nice tube doors!  >:D I'm taking this as a shamless promotion point for my half doors, I think they look a little better than tubes and are more wind resistant but not as light.

This pic was taken before I finnished welding, the welding is done and it's mounted but not painted. I will try and post an image of it mounted. The stupid thing is my father grabbed a random junkyard handle with I fabricated around and now it broke when I went to finnaly install it and I don't know what the doner was. I still intend to finnish it with fold back mirrors and a custom vinle window for the rain.                     NMc

JoeCool : Why did you leave the upper window frame on?

MKOLSEN22 : Are you going to put some CJ style folding mirrors on the tube doors or leave them clean?

After I skin the doors I'll probably leave them clean untill I get hassled about it.  On the other hand I might just put one on the driver's side.  Time will tell.

Sorry it took so long to post pics, looking at them my kick has seen better days. I intend to get heep style folding mirrors or whatever is cheep from the junkyard/ JC Whittneys. I left the window frame on so when it's finished it will have a vinyle window that snaps in place.

The biggest  :-X about it is that the randomly junk yard acquired handle broke after installation. I didn't perfectly align the dowel bends and tried to twist it into place, stupid monkey.  >:(  I spent quite a few hours making it work around that bloody handle. Does anybody recognize it so i can get a replacement by chance? I'm at school now and don't have access to tools or time to refab for a different handle.

So it still needs to be sanded and painted but the rest is cool. What do you guys think?  NMc

joecool, your handle looks to be the inside door handle from a toyota pick-up. not real sure but from what i can see in the picture they were pretty much used on all toys from 84-88 and 4runners until 90. by the way cool looking doors. 8)
