I was surfing CL and came across this posting with a '99 GV for sale. It's located in Washington state. Anyway, what caught my eye was the engine. I wrote the seller and he states it's a six cylinder.
Canadian?

My Canadian GV has the V6.... and it doesn't look like that. There wasn't a straight six so I'm guessing he doesn't know what he's talking about (probably the 4-banger)
-
that engine looks the same as my old 2L 4cylinder Vitara ::) but im not surprised he got it wrong as it has 97KW ;D
-
I've been looking around here in BC for one and I find a lot advertised with a 2.5L 4cyl. I think it is just people that have no idea what they have ::)
-
I always thought the GRAND Vitara had a V6 and that a regular Vitara had either the 4 or 6.
-
gvs have 1.6L 4c, 2L 4c or 2.5 V6 ( XL7 2.7 V6 )
some Vitaras from 95-98 had 2L 4c or 2L 6c
But thats in australia :)

right sorry, north american's didn't even have a "Vitara" until 99... and i'm still pretty sure the Grand never came with anything but a 2.5 over here.

According to my FSM, it should have four ignition coil assemblies along the top of the engine, to be the J20 4 cyl 2 litre fitted to the GVs. I can't see them. Also, the airbox should not be in the middle.
I wonder whether it's a Suzuki engine at all? Could it be a home-brew?

This is what I'm talking about. I've seen the 2.0 liters in the Vitaras and 2.5 and 2.7 V6 engines in GV and XL7. This photo shows something completely different. The intake appears to be on the left hand (US Driver's side) and there are no coil packs on top of the cylinder that I can spy.

Notice it doesn't have the strut bar going up over the engine. Very certain it's not a factory engine. Wish the picture was bigger. I think I see a throttle so we know it's not diesel...

it looks like a toyota six of some sort but most of the I6's sold here are dohc but the efi and the mass air flow look like early celica parts or maybe land cruiser but definately not suzuki

I don't believe that's a photo of the GV underhood at all. Battery's in the wrong place, wiper motor appears to be on the wrong side, brake boost/master cylinder appear to be too high-set on the firewall, the grill of the blower intake cowl are visible and shouldn't be from that angle, the nice, slow curve of the top of the firewall isn't Vitara-esqe, etc. I think someone just posted the wrong photo.

I am pretty sure that is a Toyota 4 cyl in a Toyota pick up
-
You're right it's a toyota, like a Tacoma 4 banger or something.
I mean the whole picture not just the engine.

Thats not a GV look at the wiper motor for one :P the battery wrongs sides. Toyota motor
