Title: Started the SAS
Post by: joe_and_jeep on May 13, 2007, 08:41:32 PM
I didn't have much anything better to do today so I started on the SAS on my Tracker.  I had a CJ D30, YJ Springs and some other parts.  I still need to gear the axles, build a driveshaft and build shackles.  I still cruised it around the yard with no shackles for craps and giggles.  If I keep the Tracker rear, I'm gonna go with 4.88s (I have an Auto) or if I use my D44 rear, I'll go with 5.38s.  I would rather have the 5.38s but I dont really feel like putting the D44 in.

How did you do your steering because i am going to do a SAS with the same donor parts but wanted to figure out the little stuff before the swap. Did you do a spring under or over, i want to do a spring under till i get money for gears and bigger tires gotta do a little at a time. but was afraid of clearence issues.

Yea, it wasn't all that difficult.  I measured how far the spring eye was to the centering bolt on the leaf spring.  Then measured that far back from the front axle centerline.  I moved the front axle up 1".  Made my marks, welded the brackets in.  Then cut the old front suspension out.  Slid the leaf springs and axle in, bolted them up.  Made some makeshift shackles till I get my good ones, put the tires on and measured for the steering.  I cut up a CJ tie rod and a Tracker outer tie rod (So I can keep adjustability) and but welded them and slid a sleeve over that and welded it.  The steering is actually very beefy.  The Tracker brake lines even work.  And they're super long so I'll be in good shape.

I know it isn't the most ideal, but Fletcher I will give you my front sami axle!!! You can put a 5.12 third in it!!! You have the springs already!!!

Damn Element, thats very nice of you! I guess a sammy axle is a start. Now I just need to learn how to weld good enough or have your buddy do it for me.

It doesnt look like you extended the frame or did you cant really tell from the pics. The tracker braklines screwed into the D30, or did you adapt them to fit?
