Hey all,
This is my first post here... I'm hoping to get a bit of help with my 99' Suzuki Grand Vitara Adventure Edition. Recently I've been having issues when the vehicle is in drive and I accelerate between 0-30 km/h. I'm getting a vibration when I step on the accelerator, and it subsides when I let off the gas. I have checked the manifold covers and the catalytic converter, and cant seem to find the source. I have had the vehicle since it was new, and it is in mint condition with 136,500 kms, with this being the first issue I've run into. Has anyone had similar issues, or possibly have an idea of what the rattle may be caused by? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

Maybe it's an engine mount.

Hi Ian... that's what I'm thinking. I'm gonna' pull it up on ramps tomorrow and take a look underneath. Thanks for the help :-)

The automatic trans could be at fault. :-\ Have you serviced it?
Also, are you sure that it's not just an engine miss? Plugs changed recently? Timing check and throttle body cleaning may help. Run some fuel injector cleaner through it too. After that...Torque converter or drive shaft "U" joint probs possibly.
I LIKE that model GV of yours. I had never seen that one before. :)
Non USA?

Hey Novadon,
Thanks for the reply.... I've managed to track the rattle down to the Catylitic converter (I'm thinking maybe the resinator is burning out?). I haven't had a chance to work on it yet but hopefully soon :-)
The model of the GV was released in Canada in 99'... I believe they released one "Adventure Edition" in Canada in each colour that the 99's came in. I've seen the white on kicking around here in Red Deer, Alberta... and I think the red one is in Edmonton Alberta.

If it's just a rattle, then COOL! I was focusing in on "vibe". ;)
Heat shield rattle will certainly drive ya' nuts, although usually only when either cold or hot, but not all of the time.
PS, still a nice ride that Adventure Edition! Makes the old 99' look like something NEW, style wise! :)

Hey guys,
Sorry I havent been able to make it on here for a few weeks...... I am still having the problem though and have narrowed it down to the catalytic converter..... I'm thinking that maybe it is wearing out? Has anyone else here had issues with their catalytic converter?
Thanks for your help! :-)

I haven't on the Zuki, but have on other cars. If you beat on the cat with a rubber mallet, you should be able to hear rattling / dislodged internal parts IF that's the source of the noise. A new cat will run you about $150.

Hey Nova,
Yep that's exactly what I did, and it rattles like crazy lol.... and of course Suzuki warranty covers the Cat up to 130,000 kms, and I'm about 9,000 over that now lol. Does the rattle generally mean it's shot? or is it possible that there's some rocks lodged in there?
Thanks for all of your help :-)

If rocks... you've got a REAL problem! LOL
Glad you found the noise source.

Hey Nova,
Ok.... lol.... went to the shop the other day and had the catalytic converter cut out and replaced with a straight pipe...... vibration is still there :-(
I know that it is definately coming from the exhaust system, and I'm thinking it may be the heat guard on the pipe that comes out of the top (front) where the cat goes. :-S
-
Yep. Heat shield, but I thought that you had already looked for that.
No emission tests at your location? (Cat-LESS now) ;)

I got an 02 Tracker 2.5, had a similiar issue, took it to the shop a few times, they told me an exhuast hanger was rubbing against the heat shield. They moved the hanger, problem gone!!
Good Luck

Hey guys!
Novadon - Yep no restrictions on catalytic converters here in Alberta :-) If the car ever ends up out-of-province though, it will need one
Still having the vibration issues... I checked again and found a broken exhaust hanger, but I dont think that's what's causing the issue. It only happens at 1500 rpm, no higher, no lower. Eventually I think I'm just going to take it to the shop and get it fixed because it's frustrating me too much lol

U-joint or R&P wear is my guess.

there is a TSB about the heat shields. My xl-7 has this issue only makes noise just above 1000 rpm's then goes stops. Also stops once up to temp. So if your is happen all the time hot or cold then this might not be your issue. Just a thought.
