Hey guys!!
What is a better-stronger rear diff?? The one out of an 86 sammy or a 91 tracker? Was loking at doing a gear swap in the sammy rear but if the tracker is stronger i will use that!!
-
I'm pretty sure the sidekick/tracker rear diffs are stronger than sami's.
-
The diff should be stronger, as it is a bit larger.
Aren't the axle tubes weaker though? I seem to remember reading that somewhere...
-
I picked up a sky hybird tracker rear with 1/4" thick tubes off set for the sammie for 225.00 with cnc'd end caps, the tracker diffs that you pick up in pairs would bolt right into it, small in the front end and larger in the rear, the axels are the weak link.
-
If you get the electronic locker, they come with bullet proof axles.
-
so would i be better off keeping the sammy rear and just putting gears in it rather then changing it? By the sounds of things the sammy is a better diff. But if your into putting time and $ into the tracker difff it is better!
-
It all depends on how hard you are on it, if your breaking axels go to a yota rear, if you can get two tracker front gears you will have more diff clearence,I have the hybird tracker rear for ease of parts and to haul more weight and tow a heavy trailer, I also have the 16 valve engine and 6.1 to 1 gears in the x-fer case and went through two sammie diffs in one month when I went to 33" ltb's that weigh 100 lbs a piece plus the spare, with a 33" bfg there was no problems.

I think that the Track/Kick axle is stronger all round. The diff is significantly larger and the axles certainly don't bend like the Samurai ones do.

so all in all i should run the tracker diff?? Im not gooing to be stupid hard on it!! I want to run 33" tires. But mabey just 33/10.50/15 ?? If i ran the 5.13 gears out of the tracker what gera sshould i put in the t-case? 4-1,6-1,8-1.???? I do a little mudding and some little rock crawling!!
-
you need to give more info, trail rig only no freeway?,stock engine?,do you have tires now?, if you run the stock tracker rear end it will be off set from the sammie t-case and you will need a toy front drive shaft to run on the tracker rear and maybe have some bad vibes on the street,if you run a tsl tire you won't have to spin them to clean them on a sammie in the mud,if you run a sammie tracker hybird you would have to run the sammie axels anyway, I like the six to one gear set over the four to ones but if your low on bucks do the four to one and a good clutch (400.00 plus 300.00) there are a lot of combo's, i'm kinda easy on my rig with 33's but if I were to do it again I would go toyota axles but getting all the money together at once to do toys are the hard part for me, the high steer and the gears and lockers are not cheap but maybe you could find a used set cheaper already set up,I just run 4.30's because I drive mine on the freeway but if your trail only go for 5.79's or so and be done with it.

I went with the Hybrid rear due to a lack of homework on my build before hand. Someone said the Tracker gears would drop straight into a Samurai, so I bought them. Then I decided since I already had the gears, I might as well go to the Hybrid rear end. :P
The two Sammy's in my club both use stock Samurai rear carriers with lockers and don't have a problem with 31" tires. One is running 4.88 gears with a 5.8:1 transfer case (and a rock block), the other has stock gears and 4:1 transfer case. Neither has had any problems relating to the strength of the carrier or the gears. We did break an axle shaft and take out most of the rear end due to the stub rotating around and unscrewing the adjustment in the carrier, but that was a pretty unique case.
My cousin has 33X12.5X15 TSL Swampers with an 8:1 transfer case, stock gears. It's currently a pavement pounder, but he hopes to start wheeling it once he gets some lockers installed. We have taken it up in the snow and played around a little bit, but no hardcore wheeling.
If you want stock gearing in hi range and 33" tires you need to go with a 5.8:1 transfer case or better. If you go with anything lower(higher) then you will have to drop the ratio in your diffs as well.
If you do a search you can find several in depth discussions on Transfer case vs Diff gears. Those should be able to help you make a decision.

Its more a trail rig then a road king!! But i do drive it to wark a little about 30km round trip! Going to be running the 8valve 1.6 with fuel injection! The reason for all the questions is that i can buy a crashed 91 tracker for a couple Hundred canadian. It has 5.13gears both diffs are there. Trany and T-case, and the 1.6 right now i have 31-10.5-15 swamper truxus!! But would like to go to 33-12.5-15 TSL!! Thats why i was asking witch was stronger.. But it seems like leaving the sammy rear and putting the gears and locker would be the easyer way to go? IF i was to put in the gears should i do a t-case reduction? or just do the t-case and leave the diffs?
-
I would buy the kick and put in the tracker rear and find a toy drive shaft for it and put the front gears in a sammie carrier for the front and get the transfer case gears to save your clutch with 33's.
-
how far offset is the tracker diff going to be? Do alot of guys run it like that? with 5.13 gears what should i do for t-case gears?
-
The 4 to 1's have the best street manners, then trail tough's 5 to 1's then their 6.1 to 1's, you could find a set of street 35" tires for driving to work and 33's for off road. the tracker rear is in the center and the sammie transfer case is prob a good 6 inches over to the passinger side so you would need a drive shaft with three u joints, or a hybird rear for around 200 bucks.
-
Heck, with the Tracker 1.6 in there I would go with a 4:1 kit and a Tracker3 setup. Go with a Hybrid rear and call it good.
Double check what year the Tracker is. In 96 they switched the side gears on them, so if you want to just swap the front diff's you would need to buy some heavy duty front axles with the larger spline.
-
What is a tracker 3 setup? And where can i find a hybrid rear?
-
Do alot of guys run 33" tires on stock sammy running gear? am i in for a kick in my ass?? I just dont want to be always breaking stuff? Is there anything i can use the trany and t-case out of the tracker for? Would the gas tank fit in my sammy?
-
I run 33" tires with Calmini Heavy Duty front axles, a malfunctioning Detroit Ez-Lock and a pension for pre-loading my tires up against rocks meant my old splines became nice and twisted. But I still use the stock birfields and rear axles. I'm also running the stock motor from my SJ-410, so less HP and Torque might have something to do with the lack of breakage. Most people consider 33" tires the breaking point, some people break all the time and others don't.
The Kicker3 is from OTT Industries and splices the Tracker transfer case with the Suzuki transfer case, giving you access to multiple low ranges. Similar to double transfer cases on the Toyota and the Rock Block.
Linkage (http://www.ottindustries.com/kicker3.htm).
This would allow you to use the transmission and half of the transfer case from the Tracker. There are a couple threads out there with pictures of Tracker 3 installations in Sammys.
The Hybrid Rear is available from just about any of the aftermarket companies. I usually point people at Hawk Suzuki just because they can find a lot of the off parts for my SJ-410 easily and are great to deal with. But any of the aftermarket companies should do you well.

A buddy of mine is running 33"s on his sammi, with lock-rites front and rear with a 6.5:1 T-case gearing. He has never busted a birf or rear axle.

Am i better just putting somthing like the 6.1 or the 8.1 in my t-case rather then changing the diff gears?? 5.13 will be weaker then my 3.73 right?
-
Who would you guys recomend to buy the T-case gears from?
-
Its also a lot more user friendly to put in your own T-case gears. Unlike putting in a R&P, takes quite a bit longer and possibly someone who knows what there doing.
And yes a 3.73 would be sronger, theres more metal on it than the 5.13.
But in a zook i dont think you would have a problems with breaking eatither one of them.

Hawk has the 6.5:1 and the 4:1 transfer case kits.
Trail Tough has the 4:1, 4.8:1 and 6.4:1 kits.
Rocky Road has the 8:1 and 6:1 kits, but make sure they have the 8:1 in stock before you order it. Otherwise you could be waiting a while.
Asian Auto Parts of Arizona has 4.1:1, 4.9:1, and 6.4:1 kits.
Roadless Gear has 4.1:1, 6.1:1 kits.
Most of the companies offer rebuilt transfer cases if you don't want to do it yourself. :)

Thanks Guys!!
