Title: How common were the 1.3 sidekicks
Post by: urbanwheeler on May 30, 2007, 06:41:22 PM
I was wondering how common the 1.3 sidekicks were, and if they were comparable to the samurai in performance.

I would venture a guess that they are pretty rare. I know I've never seen one and I've looked! LOL! I've looked hard for one in a junk yard because I want the 5.38 thirds out of it!

5.62 not 5.38  ;D

Factory made

4.62 (automatic)
5.12 (Manual)

5.62 (verrrry rare)

However we do have 4.56, 5.38 (but this is made for Suzuki Samurai I believe) and 5.89 gears (all are aftermarket)

Calmini most likely carry 5.83 or 5.89 gears for sidekick/tracker but they are hella pricey...  almost $300 for one side I believe.  4.56 and 5.38 should range from 175 to 200.

Now, you know the options.....

There is a 1.3 sidekick in the junkyard where I live. I have used some engine parts off of it for my sammy. The trannsmission and transfer case are gone but it seem to be pretty much complete otherwise.

From everything I have read/heard, the 1.3 carbed engine they used WAS the samurai engine.....so that would make them very comparable to a samurai performance wise....the 1.3 sidekicks used 5.625 diff gears, I'm assuming because they weigh more than a samurai, the lower gears were needed to keep the "performance" up.

I would have thought that the extra size and weight of a Track/Kick would really hurt the performance.

The 5.38's were in the early 8v 5 speed 4-door trackicks
I'm wondering if you could actually get these from the dealer, and for what price!... just out of curiosity.

You are correct, the 5.38 factory gears came in the 91, 4 doors, with 5 speeds and the 8V engine.
The aftermarket makes the 5.38s for a samurai....which would net you a front gearset for a trackick...but it is the rear gearset for a trackick, that is hard to get.
