Title: Lower 5th gear sometime in 88 samurais?
Post by: daddyizzle on June 07, 2007, 05:26:31 PM
That's what I heard and now I'm really curious if this is true. I saw an 88 or 88.5 5 speed tranny go on eBay for just over 280.00 and it wasn't even polished! (Ha Ha!) Now I'm wondering if maybe that's why. Maybe only a couple of year transmissions had this feature for the transmissions that worked in the pre 88 samurais and that's why it went so ridiculously high?

Anyone know?

88.5 and newer have a slightly lower 5th gear... not enough to spend money and swap to tho.

my 87 was better than my 88.5 with some mods...

Thanks. I just thought that if I did get a different tranny since mines a whiner and a leaker, I might grab one while I attempt to rebuild mine. Lower 5th couldn't hurt. I wonder what the difference would translate for holding highway speeds. I'm also thinking that they went to the married transmission/transfercase the next year which would mean that  only the 88.5 transmission would work on the pre 88s for the lower 5th gear benefit. I certainly wouldn't pay 280.00 for one in unknown used condition! (unless they cleaned it and polished it up real nice! Haha!!!)
