Title: Tracker: slipping clutch
Post by: johnes50 on June 08, 2007, 08:53:14 PM
Hi guys.  I'm a new member here and have just bought my first Tracker, a 5-speed '89 tintop Tracker with 215k on it and love driving it.

My problem is the clutch slips when I upshift into 3rd or 4th gear.  It doesn't do it at low revs or when starting out in 1st.  Can it be adjusted or do you think the clutch is tired?  I just bought it a month ago and don't know if the clutch has ever been changed.  Any ideas?

well if it got 215k miles on it and if the guy you bought it off of didnt say it had a good clutch in it then chances are it needs a new one

Once it starts slipping, it will only get worse over time.

I'd recommend replacing it sooner than later so it doesn't affect your flywheel, and so that you don't get pissed off with the thing.

Yea, I thought I might have to replace the clutch, but wishful thinking made me think there might be an easy fix or an adjustment I could do.  Thanks

You can try adjusting it. There is an adjuster down at the bellhousing end of the cable. It should be set so that there is 1mm/40 thou of freeplay on the cable.

Sorry to hijack the thread but i need to know something.

My clutch feels pretty good since i replaced it a few months ago.  I usually keep it adjusted so i have about an inch or two of freeplay in the pedal before it engages the clutch.  But about every other week i have to adjust it up more because the pedal keeps dropping.  Its like my clutch i wearing down...which cant be cause i never ride it.  Last week i had adjusted it so  much already i had to take the arm on the tranny off and move it back a couple teeth so i could adjust the cable more...whats up with that???

Sounds like your cable is stretching out.  You will probably need a replacement.
