Hello All,
I have a ’91 Tracker I bought a couple of days ago, and I am in the process of replacing the timing belt. I rotated the engine and aligned the mark on the crank pulley with the “0 on the timing cover, and made sure the Rotor was pointing at the #1 cyl. I then took everything apart, replaced the Cam and crank seals, and went to put everything together when I noticed that the timing mark on the cam sprocket looks to be 180 degrees off. My Haynes book states that the timing mark should line up with the “V mark on the camshaft seal cover, which is at approx 12:00, but my mark is at 6:00. I didn’t note the position of the cam mark as I took it apart, as the manual didn’t prompt me to. So, here’s what I can see:
A) Crankshaft is aligned with timing mark on oil pump housing
B) Camshaft mark appears to be 180 degrees off
C) Rotor is pointing at #1 cyl.
D) Location of cam lobes:
#1 Intake- Approx. 5:00
Exhaust- Approx. 7:00
#2 Intake- Approx. 7:00
Exhaust- Approx. 11:00
#3 Intake- Approx. 1:00
Exhaust- Approx. 6:00
#4 Intake- Approx. 11:00
Exhaust- Approx. 1:00
I’m pretty sure I didn’t hit or turn the camshaft during the operation so, my question is: Is something wrong here? Did I screw up? I could really use some help here, as I don’t know what to do from here. Can anyone out there tell me how to proceed?
Many Thanks,
-Charlie

The Haynes manual is wrong. The FSM says to line it up with no4. at TDC.

yep my 16 valve was on number four and the book was wrong on where the spark plug wires go also.

Thanks For all the help,
I'll button it all up tonight, and hit the trails! Imagine that, the Haynes manual was wrong :o
