Title: I don't get it??
Post by: museboy07 on June 09, 2007, 09:54:03 PM
I'm running 235s for tires with a 2.5in lift.  But I've always wanted to run 31in tires.  But my rig now is a dog uphill...especially on the highway.  First gear is good, going up a hill, but once i hit second it boggs up the hill.  I couldn't imagine having 31s going up that hill.  My engine is running good psi on each cylinder so i have good power so whats the deal?  How can you people run big tires with stock engine?  I've thought of lower gears but then I'd be running ever HIGHER rpm's.  Any input would be great..

get some light weight aluminum wheels and some light weight tires to go with them, on my sammie with the heavy ltb's I loose fifth gear with a 16 valve engine, with my light weight wheels and tires fifth gear is not a problem, and they are both 33" set's.

Could you direct me to some lightweight aluminum wheels?

I would gear it!  Your RPM's will not go crazy if you gear it to the tire size your running.  You can make it rev exactly as if it were stock.  Lighter tires and wheels would make a difference to 33's but I doubt you would notice much difference on 235's.  If you go bigger without gearing it or swapping the engine, the problem will surely get worse.

I shift at redline. That way when you grab the next gear your still in the powerband. Also nobody said that big tires and stock motors were'nt dogs.

I can relate to your pain. I am wondering what can be done to give a bit more "grunt"?
Lighter wheels would reduce rotational mass, but at the cost of being more susceptible to damage.

see im not worried bout "damaging" them.  I dont wheel hard enough.  Redline is 6500 rpms.  Id be scared to shift that high.  Id blow it up with my luck.  My motor got 125000 miles and the valves or lifters or whatever are tickin so i wouldnt wanna shift that high

I have 235/75/15's as well, I haven't really noticed mine lagging. Unless you are doing some steep grades you shouldn't really have any problems. Don't be afraid to rev it at 4000 rpm...these engines like to scream. Is yours an 8v or 16v? Also, do you have you hubs locked or not? That makes a pretty good difference. You may want to free it up with a 2" cat-back exhaust. You get an improved throttle response for sure.

Yes you have to rev it at least to 4-5000 RPM, also your cat may be burnt which robs power. Save up for a cat-back 2 1/4" exhaust and a turbo muffler. It really helped mine a lot. Less than $300 installed at a shop in Phoenix.   Also gave me 2 mpg extra. I'm getting close to 28 now with 35 psi in the tires. I beat my son's Civic, mpg.

I felt the same way you did. But the big tires do make a difference :-[  I have Outlaw 2 alloy 15x7 wheels and 30's, still pretty heavy. I went from 45mph up hills revving in 3rd at 5000 rpm with two guys and gear to zipping up hills at 65-70 mph in 4th-5th at 4500-5000 rpm with 4 guys and backpacking gear. Just since the exhaust mod. Plus it sounds cool.

I have a set of 31" LTB's on steel rims and 5th gear is useless on the street.  But with my eagle alloy's and 31" BFG Muds its great on the street...

I bounce mine off the rev limter all the time if you would blow yours up i would want to shake your hand. I have 153,000 miles and i rap it out all the time heck i have got to or i have no power. these liitle 4 bangers are made for the higher rpms thats were the power band is. heck my tracker does not have a hole lot of power til 3000 RPMs on mine you can actually feel the thing set you back(for a 1.6 16V). If you would blow urs up i would be very very very amazed.

Even the 8v's are tough, a friend of mine was stuck almost to the top of his 33's, and he was at redline and the limiter on and off in forward and reverse for a good 15 minutes, it sounded great! He lost 2 cylinders because it got wet, but otherwise it took it like a champ.

I've seen a few blown up, usually its a rod that lets go and makes a big mess. The 16Vs are less reliable than the 8Vs but thats probably because they make a lot more power. I'll have to have a search for a pic that was posted on another forum a while back. Almost cut the block in two  :o

so your tellin me i could shift at 5 grand and shouldn't even have problems? I mean thats not even red line...I never take mine past 4 grand

Yeah you should be able to rev it up to 5,000+ unless your engine is going to go soon anyway. The redline means the engine was designed to rev that high. I don't take it that far,  ( to the limiter ) but I'll go to 5-5.5 if needed.

Larger tires change the load on your engine so that the engine cannot provide the torque needed to move the truck at various speeds.  You need to change the gearing on your drivetrain to get the engine power band and driveline loading back to normal.

I put 30 inch BFG-AT/KOs on my 1.6 8-valve Samurai with a stock drivetrain.  While the engine was an improvement over the 1.3, I still had power problems in daily driving.  This last weekend, I swapped my 3.73 Ring and Pinions for 4.62 units and the drivability difference was amazing!  No bogging down at highway speeds in 4th or 5th gear.  I could let the clutch out at idle while stopped on level ground and the engine did not die or struggle.

Redlining the engine will eventually result in a blown engine - which is a lot more expensive than re-gearing your differentials...

my 2 cents...

I run mine down the highway and it's running 42-4300 rpm's.  When I need power, I always need to shift around 5 grand

Ive been there and done that. I was running 31 mud kings on my 95 Geo 5 speed. The best combo is to run the Hawk torquer cam and header. 5th gear will come back to ya!
