Hello all... i've been a zuki owner for a total of two weeks and im ready to turn my completely stock samurai into a gnarly slamurai. i live in truckee california and everyone's rockcrawlers consist of toyotas and jeeps. i've had a lot of people recommend that i swap out the stock axles for toyota axles (which i can get for free-fifty). i was just wondering if it's even worth it to swap them out and if anyone does it. I appreciate it.

First off
Wlcome aboard J-Ron
and a lot of people do the swap over to Yota axles on the Sammies
Mostly when tire size gets over 31"s
But I just have a Kick on 32"s and I'd Do Yota axles if the chance
came up. again. ;D

does anyone know of any kits for the yoda axle swap? is the steering usually an issue? also, i want to put on the spring over axle kit from petroworks and if i swap the axles, would it be better to go with separate parts or a more basic kit?

Trail Tough sells a pretty trick system for the sami. That would be my first choice.

I second trail tough. call and talk to brent he will set you straight on what you need. if your going toy axles might as well go YJ springs at the same time.
-
I would do it...
Well i am going to do it in a month or two.
You need to get the toyota to samurai axle conversion kit from sky, or if you have the shop to do it you could make it your self. You will also need a toyoata samurai hi-steer kit and some drive line adaptors. Try to get a CV drive shaft off the front of a toyota to use as a rear for your sammi.
Im going with a YJ kit for my project
hope that helps out some what

Regarding the Trail Tough kit: Is everyone referring to the "Custom Toyota Rear End Housing and axle" ?? If so, does this come with everything you need ? (i.e. does it come with the axles so you don't have to find them in salvage??)
Thanks

You have to buy them along with the housing. One is a cut down and re-splined shortend axle and the other is out of a turndra. (I think, some one correct me if im wrong)
Last but not least, you will have to come up a with a 3rd member, but a toyota 3rd is very easy to find.
You dont have to run a modified rear axle, there are lots of people who are running a non modified rear end, as i said befor you just have to have a CV drive shaft for the rear. Too be on the safe side thou, you would probbly want to beef up your T-case mounts and tranny.
Sky manufacturing also has a modified toyota rear for a sammi application.

the toy axle swap kit is only for the front axle i believe, and for that kit, is there any other leafs that will work other than the yj's? it kills me to put a jeep part on my slamurai. so is there any kits out there for the rear axle or is there no need for one?

Im not sure of any other spring that fits under a samurai. I know that there are non YJ springs, but they are the same length as a stock sammy spring, just arched and better built. But that kinda defeats the point, you want the longest spring possible, and you want it to move your axle foward. That way you can strech your wheel bace and it it as flexy as possible while keeping it as low as possible.
Ya, the toyota to samurai kit is just for the front axle only.
The only things you have to get for the rear axle are 2 toyota spring perches, there a whopping 30 bucks for 2. You just have to cut the old ones off then relocate them to the samurai width, wich is about 3.24 narrower. (I think)
Hope that helps

Sure he doesn't. As long as he likes driveline vibe and quickly eroding driveshaft joints, especially a CV or double carden type.
Running a center diff axle in a truck with an offset T-case output is fubar and technically wrong. No CV or DC in the world will compenate for the compound axles. Period. Arguing this point any other way only shines on the lack of engineering concepts on one's part.
Sure, folks have done it and claim it's the best damn thing since Wonder came sliced. But I've also seen folks use 8" shackles, claim Z-bars cure bumpsteer, make driveline spacers out of poly, and use treated wood as axle lift blocks. Everyone of them claims it worked, and they were "correct". But work correctly is a matter of debate.
The correct way is to build, buy or steal a modified off-set Toy rear axle. Otherwise, sell the sammy and use the axles on a Kicker. At least that way the axles have the correct driveline parameters.
Now, can we all put this urban myth to bed?

Got my axle and drive line for free...
When the drive line takes a dump ill put an off set rear end in.
