Title: Fighting rust.....
Post by: Speedracer7c on June 18, 2005, 12:14:16 AM
Well yesterday I was looking at my tracker, and I noticed that some of the rubber coating or whatever it is in the rear wheel well was peeling above the body mount. So I poked it, and just my luck its all rusted and punky. So that means it rusted from the inside out. I just bought new fenders for the front and was going to take care of all the rust issues out back and stuff but now im' wondering if I should just try and find a rust free body tub and swap it. Has anyone else had rust here? The reason why it bothers me is cause its right above the body mount. I'm afraid to see what else is under that coating.....

Yah there is still carpet in it but its never been wet. As long as I've had it, and i'm sure the old lady that had the tracker before me didn't get it wet either. lol

heh ... wanna bet? ... the carpet will feel dry, but the friggin pad underneath is a sponge that holds water FOREVER.

I don't think it even takes "rainfall" to get that pad wet. just some humidity in the air, the pad soaks it up, and never lets it go.

Pull the carpet, strip off the remnants of the pad, cuss at the rust ...

BED LINER SPRAY! I am not shitty you 110%. Buddies Cherokee had rusty spots on the rockers, we sanded the paint off and sprayed bedliner on and it hasn't come back since. Now, you may not like the look of bedliner but that won't be an issue for you since your going to cover the area backup with carpet again anyway. Sand it down, spray that shit on there and no worries!

Carpet removal and bedlining are one of the first things everyone should do after buying a Trackick... Carpet's overrated anyway :P

Alright then, what about carpet pad removal, bedlining, and putting the carpet back in, sans the pad?

I'll have to take a picture of where i'm talking about. Because where it rusted isn't even on the floor pan.

If it's rusting from the inside out, you have exposed metal elsewhere... but the soggy carpet padding isn't helping things a bit ;)

This morning while organizing the recovery gear in the back of my 93 Tracker prior to today's run, I decided to pull the cargo floor carpet and see what condition the pad was in. It was moist! not dripping, but definately not dry, either! and this Tracker hasn't been in any water deep enough to come inside (since I've owned it, at least ;)) and it's never been left in the rain with the top open. I guess I need to pull all the carpeting now... ::)

As for where yours is rusting, sounds like a common place from every Tracker I've seen. That's the rear seat floor area and where moisture will sit and sit without ever drying up with the stock carpet padding in there...

You guys got me to go check my Sam, which has been sitting all winter.  I ripped out all the carpet and pad ( it was wet and moldy ) and sanded everything in preparation for bed liner coating.  I think I'll do inside the body panels also for sound proofing. Rust is not really a problem here in sunny california. Next stop Walmart...

This for me is the most frustrating part of owning a tracker. living on the east coast we get alot of salt not only from the atlantic but also from the road ways that are white long after the snow melts. I rebuilt my tracker last year and it's already rusting out again. From the two trackers I rebuilt, I found it's the rockerpanels, the floor pan and the front fenders next to the bumper that rust out the quickest. I spray lined my second kick the first week I got it. worked like a charm. I honestly don't understand why it's so hard for manufacturers to make a washable interior (with a hose) and plastic body panels like a saturn or something. I mean they know that the truck is gonna go somewhere sometime in it's life...  but then they can't make a car that'll last "too" long .. :-/
