Title: Removing rear end of tracker
Post by: Rileysowner on July 12, 2007, 08:44:33 AM
Although I have not had time to trace down exactly where the leak around my diff is, I am considering removing the whole rear end so I can not only fix whatever leak there is, but also clean up the rear end assembly of its rust and give it a paint job.

My question is how difficult is it to remove the rear end?  Are there any special tools that I would need?  Any step by step instructions out there?

you'd have to disconnect the brake lines and jack it up to take the tires off but i think it would be fairly straight forward.

No special tools, just wrenches and sockets.

Remove the wheels, remove driveshaft, undo main brake line, unbolt the upper 3rd link and shocks, then unbolt the control arms, and it will be out.  It should be less than an hour.

Thanks.  Looking at it I thought that might be what I would have to do.  Now to find the time.

You undo the joint where it meets the hardline, up on the frame end.

Don't forget to disconnect the parking brake cables...

Save your self some trouble and try to remove the outter control arms first. They will frequently freeze up in the bushing and not come out without distroying them. Hit them with an impact and see if you can break them free first.
