Hi, how do I find out if this valve is working correctly? Just changed brake cylinders on a 97 Sidekick 4 door and can't get any fluid out of the left cylinder when I bleed it.

crack the brake line and see if you get any at the output of the valve - if so you probably have a collapsed line of some dirt in it.

On my 94 it goes into my right side wheel cylinder from the valve and then back out of the wheel cylinder to the left side, so if your getting fluid on one side and not the other it should not be that hard to track down with one line going across the rear diff.

Further troubleshooting indicates that the proportioning valve doesn't seem to be porting fluid to the rear brake side of the valve at all. Any suggestions (besides a new one)? What sort of crossover is there between years/models/badges? Dealer wants around $440 Cdn bucks for a new one.

Just to ask, did you install a lift on that truck? 'Cause, if you did but didn't adjust the actuating spring, there's your whole problem right there. In your troubleshooting, did you unhook the spring?
If you're jacking the back of the truck up by the frame, the axle will be at down-travel, letting the valve cut off the supply. Also, if I recall correctly, the valve is on the passenger side, so if you jack the truck by placing the jack under the driver side of the axle, again, the valve will be extended, meaning no-juice-for-you.
(edit: I'm familiar with the 03's setup, not the pre-99 stuff.)

If you want to just take the guts out of it and put it back together with out them. if its stuck pull the cap off and hit the brakes real hard. ;D

No lift, she's stock. We've tried jacking the rear diff. while the frame is on jackstands, no luck. Lowered it to as much weight-on-wheels as would allow access, still no juice. Checking wreckers, but 97s seem pretty scarce. Don't know what other years might work. One place has a 98, would that work? :-\

If it's the same mechanism as on mine, definitely try just unhooking the linkage from the axle comepletely. Could be something as simple as a spring rusted too much to allow stretching.

Looks like there is also an Adjustment screw on top.

and there looks like there is also a bleeder valve on that too.

Wow, they cleaned that design up A LOT in the next generation.
I guarandamntee nothing transfers over. So much for my spare part(s).

BTW: this shot is off of my 97 4dr which is saddly sold to a guy that has already
lifted it with the TrailTough SAS kit and Yota axles.

Is the LSPV fitted to all US Track/Kicks? Theres nothing like that on my 2dr UK model.

That explains that - we didn't get RWAL either. We had a Cadence Compatible Braking System. If you want to brake hard in slippery conditions you just pump the pedal really fast ;D ;D

yea, the RWAL is worthless anyway ... but the proportioning valve may come in handy when I eventually go to rear discs ;)

I don't think this is the same valve as the RWAL system used. I think the proportioning valve for that is somehow connected up with the master cylinder according to our Chilton. We don't have it, so I haven't studied it, though.
On the topic of our problem, we found a '98 at a wrecking yard and they sold us the one from that vehicle for $50. Put it in last night and "voila", we now get fluid where and when we should! Got the right spring kit for the rear drums this time, too. The last time we replaced the hardware, we suspect we were given the wrong kit, probably the one for a 2dr.
Anyways, thanks a lot for all the help, Zukifolks. Now to go take the old valve apart just for the fun of it to see what was up!
