Title: Front locker question
Post by: S.Sidekick on July 16, 2007, 02:13:49 PM
i am driving to school all next year during the fall, i am planning on locking my sidekick, i was going to get a rear locker because my friend drives his samurai with one and has no problems.  but the peopel that put my lift kit on told me to get a front locker because when my hubs are free i wont be locked, Wa gets some snow now and then and i drive to the mountains every week to go boardin and people tell me that rear lockers suck in the snow wut should i do?

ARB's are fun, I'll give you that.  :)

You can also go with one of the Limited Slip diff's that Hawk Suzuki now has available.  As for going up snowboarding, you probably don't need the locker up front.  Last year I didn't even bother with 4wd once I had some decent tread on it.

Once you learn to drive with the locker you'll love it, in the front they can make things squirly which can be worse with out power steering, when one tire has traction and the other is on ice it can try to jerk the steering away from you toward the tire that slips. In the rear it can be just as bad tho. if the front tires are on ice and the backs have traction it will push you straigt, or on icie side hills the lockered end will slide down hill faster than an open diff, and on ice you can exelerate much faster with a locker tricking you into thinking you can stop faster, however

In deep snow, Rocks, ugly mud, and hi articulation spots, you will love the locker, I ran limited slips in a Ramcharger for years, they are a half way mesure you have all the draw backs of an open diff+all the draw backs of a locker just their only half as bad as either

If I was worried about it I would invite your buddy to go snow baording with you, and try out his sammi on the snow/ice the tracker will drive simmilarly! If only i could a tru-track for the tracker that would get my vote!

You mean the ones Calmini has been importing for almost 2 decades?  Surprised when folks say "new" LSDs are available.

Actually, they're EXACTLY Calmini's.  Literally.
