Title: gearing?
Post by: irishzuk on July 24, 2007, 08:26:18 PM
would this be a good gear setup for a 88' samaurai?  i'm looking for 5.13 gears from a tracker(welded), 4:1 tranfer case gears, with 33's and stock motor/trans.?  going to be used for 1/2 daily driver and 1/2 trail.

I think you need to run those through a gearing calculator as it may be a bit low geared for everday driving. I know someone with 32's, 4.62's and 4:1's and its about perfect for everyday

Sounds good except the welded part, mine lasted two weeks with 33's and took everything with it, the metal is too hard to weld to,you could lead it or maybe soften the side gears a little first but it's not worth the hassle, for a hundered bucks get a spool.

I've been trying to see where to go with mine,  I've got stock sami gears and trans, 6 to 1 t-case with 33" boggers, and my top end speed is around 50 on flat ground (on speedo).  Hills eat this sami.  Motor is new rebuilt with Isky cam and weber carb and Thorley header.   ???

If your going to turn those heavy tires your going to need gears in the diffs, maybe a set of 4.62's to start off with if you plan on freeway speeds, if you have a 1.6 I would say 4.30's with the 6 to 1 gear set, the 1.3 will rev alot higher than a 1.6 needs to for the horse power and I have heard of guys runing the 1.3 up to nine grand and not blowing it up  ???  even with my 16 valve I loose 5th gear with the interco tires. right at 100 lbs. each. I think my bfg's are 85 lbs. each and you can feel the diffrence and I can use 5th gear on the flats.
