Title: What's the real harm in..........
Post by: kansascitytracker on November 25, 2004, 04:24:30 AM
leaving lockouts in the "lock" position, if the transfer case is shifted into 2WD in the cab? I just got new hubs on my rig, and am afraid to take them in and out of the lock position.

Nothing will really happen, you will just be spinning your cv shafts for no reason. May also notice a decrease in fuel economy.  Why are you afraid to take them in and out?

I figured since I finally have working ones on there, I don't want to jinx it.

its would be better for them if you move them alot!  the more you move them the better they will move.  and your fuel economy will go down and it will ware out parts in the front end quicker(just a little).

i noticed that my Vit is slower and chews more fuel with them locked in and doing normal daily driving. (once forgot to disengage them for a couple of days...)

i used to leave them in when i first got my Vit cos i was just too lazy to take them out, but then after doing a couple of CV boot changes, and some CV seals, and a front output shaft seal, i kind of see why theres a bit more wear and tear.... so for just getting out of the car and unlocking them, can save you a couple of days under the car.

so basically, increased fuel consumption, and unnecessary wear and tear of front end drive components.

If yer scared just switch to auto's.  I haven't broken a set yet on the 4-dr, But i carry spares just incase.

Usually the stock hubs work well until they begin to hold water and rust.  I'll usually open mine up and check them after a swim.  I use 10w-40 oil for lube on the manual ones, coat them well and put them together.

If you're talking about automatic hubs, I know absolutely nothing about them. But I've been 4 wheelin' for more than 45 years in Willy's Jeeps, Ford, Dodge and Chevy pickups and, for the past few months, an '88 Samurai,  every one had manual hubs. My last jeep was a '61 CJ-5. I drove it for 41 years and sold it with the original, still functioning, lock out hubs on it a couple of months ago.

I've never managed to wear out a set of hubs although, one of the hubs on one of my Ford pickups had a sudden, short, intimate relationship with a large rock, a few years ago, which was extremely detrimental to the physical well being of the hub. Didn't seem to faze the rock at all.

I have heard the auto hubs get spun out quite often, or is that a Ranger/Bronc II problem? I have heard alot of Chevy guys say that the early auto hubs had the same problems.

I've never wheeled auto's until the 4-dr.  I would not own a set on a Ford, But Asian hubs are know to be the better OEM hubs in the bunch.   THeir Auto's are working great so far.

The thing that sucks about the auto's is that they unlock when you go into reverse, so if your rocking or something you can grenade a front end pretty quick. Needless to say i ditched my autos.

Been there, done that.
We broke 2 front housings and one pinion/ring set with our autos.  FINALLY corrected my cranial/rectal inversion problem and got manual hubs and we never broke anything up front again.

Luckly with the auto I don't shift too fast and it has yet to be an issue.  But I think I'll be switching the auto's out to my DD Now...
