I was just wondering where all you 1.3 powered Samurai owners set your ignition timing? I've been running mine at 10 btdc as the OEM specs indicate but was thinking about advancing it a couple more degrees to see if I could eek out a bit more power.

wondering what your compression is at across the board? i'm set at 20 with 160lbs in each cyl. and i'm not getting any more speed than 65-67 mph. so? maybe i need to set it back to 10? idk..... maybe u could help me out too! hope tis helps with your advancing question...

IIRC the 10 degree figure is for 92 octane (RON). If you are using a higher octane then you could try a couple of degrees of extra advance. If you get any signs of pinking then put it back to stock.
The reason behind advance is to set up the burn for when the piston reaches TDC, then the expanding gases give the maximum downward force. Too much and you will lose power because the burn will give resistance to the piston on its up stroke. I would say 20 degrees would be too much advance, I'm surprised that you aren't getting any pinking.
Tweaking the timing is something that people seem to be reluctant to do these days. Too much can cause damage so you have to be sensible about it, it can also affect emissions so you may need to reset it for inspection. My old Ford has an adjuster wheel on the distributor for easily adjusting the timing although back in the Sixties it was mainly to compensate for variations in fuel quality.

I'm running 87 octane at 4400 feet elevation. Don't know what my compression is but it's not blowing any oil and the plugs look good.
I advanced my timing to 12 btdc and it got a little rough with very little power gain. Put it down to just below 11 btdc and is much smoother with a very small power gain.
