Title: Samurai ignition question(s)
Post by: brayhaven on August 23, 2007, 01:57:14 PM
I'm using a sammy 1.3 (87) engine in another application (Army Jeep replica) and wiring it myself.  I wired up the ignition & tried the spark.  Very weak yellow spark.  From what I've read, the whole system is contained withing the distributor (& coil).  Did I miss something?  Does the ECM have to be wired in to get ignition?  I Put in a new rotor, cap & good quality wires.
It was running when I took it out & overhauled it, but it's been a couple years.    Haven't tried to run it yet.  The fuel system is not quite ready.

Any suggestions?  Ideas?
Thanks,
Greg

There should be an earth wire from the dizzy to the engine and I think another to the bulkhead. Have you got them fitted?

No on the first.  I'll try that.  The bulkhead is fiberglass.
Thanks,
Greg

No luck on the grounds suggestion. :(  The components check out, except the igniter, but my meter doesn't have the range the book required for the check.  Seems, as a trigger, if it's working at all (weak spark), that shouldn't be the culprit.
Do these sammy coils need to have the neg post grounded?  This is the first one I've messed with.  Anyone else ever hard wire your ignition system to bypass the harness?
Thanks,
Greg
