Title: Time Capsule Shogun Sami *Updated*w/ pics
Post by: Shogun on November 10, 2004, 09:26:32 AM
**Updated** Finally have first pics -  :o

We just bought an all original 1988 Samurai JX Plus, from original owner with only 42 000 original kms, that's about 25 000 miles.  This Sami looks like it just came out of a time warp, it is mint mint mint.  It has zero rust ( and I mean zero, behind int panels, under flares, lower rocker panel trim), it's unbelievable!  All original paint and vinyl int (it's even mint) no tears or cracks(amazing for Canada)first set of originals I've ever seen in this condition that did not come out of a hard body.
It's red w/ black removable hard top, stock chrome wheels w/ stock original Bridgestone tires(still have nubs).  She even came w/ the cheesy front street spoiler.
We are looking for peoples input on what we should possibly do with this truck...
It is literally in stock showroom condition w/ exception of needing carb clean and a good polish, we are unsure if we should sell it bone stock, or do one of our custom builds.  It seems like a shame to build such a nice original, but on the other hand it seems like a shame not to...any input would be greatly appreciated.
Pics coming.. ;D

Thanks
Geoff

This is after initial teardown of interior(pulled some factory plugs for washing and took interior side panels off to check rear quarter seams).  We were amazed to find the floor looking like brand new, body plugs like new, bolts are still shiny!  Even factory seam sealer in the rear quarter seams are perfect! Still to this moment we are amazed that this is an all original truck!
Will have photos of seats, carpets, and reinstalled int and exterior of vehicle soon.

Mint stock Sammies are rare, but
they look so anemic (sp?) with stock
tires and no lift, and after seeing
the beefy trucks here ......   :-/

Thats a good Idea. Stock just doesn't do it. Just a little bit of work to make it shine on and off-Road ;D

Id keep specialy for shows. Have the one stock and in its mint condition, and another right beside it. Same year, model ect. Just with all the goodies added. Spring over, cross over steering, ect.  Then put up 2 signs.  On the stock one,  Grandpas. and Punk kid on the other.. lol

How much did you pay for it, Shogun?  In CDN dollars I mean?

Man, if I found a Samurai like that I would totally buy it.

I say just do some small modifications and bigger tires like everyone else has already suggested. It'd be a shame to do an cutting on the body if it's mint :-/

There aren't enough Samurai surviors out there....its so hard to find a stock one, let alone a mint stock one. How much do you want for it as it sits?

Another vote from me to leave it as stock as possible (at least any changes should be reversable without a problem).

Sounds like a "classic" due for preservation to me (that model pretty much defined the popular zuk 4x4 revolution).

Sorry no pics yet   :'(  We want to get it polished and cleaned first...
all your input has been great, please keep it coming...and we'll have pics by Tues, Wed when detail shop is done with it.
sorry, can't tell you what we paid... ::)  ancient chinese secret...lol, although we can say it wasn't cheap!
We don't know yet what we would sell it for, or if we will.  It's a case of ' will we ever find another like it?'.  If we do sell it, it won't be cheap - gotta be honest - opportunity knocks, business is business - mama needs new shoes type thing.... :-/
thanks again for your ongoing input, we appreciate it. ;D

I have to go with the recomendations for a light build.  Give it some nice wheels and some agressive looking 30" tires and lower gears.   ;D

where in canada do you live?, this thing must have been driven for like 2 summers then locked away, what a find!!!

and i agree, whatever you do to it make sure its reversable, maybe go with lift springs instead of a spoa so you dont have chunks of metal welded to your axle
no lockers, and probably not gears cause you wont wanna wheel it

I have 3 stockers I've been holding on to.  A 1990 (Second owner) a 1994 (it was a deal) & a like new CLEAN 1987 JX conv (Couldn't pass it up).   The 87 is in the best condition of them all with only 60k miles.  It currently has only a Cal-mini S/R.   It is very nice to get out and drive a stocker every now and then just to remember how it actually feels and to refresh the base line of stock accel & handeling.  A good friend just finished his 87 JX stocker and was actually keeping up with my 83 Toyota in his stocker Sammy tonight at 80 mph on the Hwy.

His others a Built carbed 8v on 33 boggers and a 16v on 36" TSL's are nice rides but none are as sweet as the clean well polished stocker.  Those things are the ones turning the most heads now.  Just as The build Sammy's have gained notability and respect among others, the stock clean sammy is becoming a very rare find.

Anouther vote for Leaving it Stock.  While in business, the advertisement value would be great sitting along side one of your tricked out rides.  Like has been said before They are so Rare.

I had a stock 90' with 45K miles on it. Red and beutiful. I bought it from a guy that kept it in a storage unit, when he wasn't pulling it behing his RV.  Sold it to some punk kid who rolled it a week latter.  It' still going, I see it every once in a while and I think I can hear it crying. I beleive I was the last person to change it's oil nearly 4 years ago.
Keep it stock, it'll save you the heart ache.
