Title: Optima or other Dry Cell????
Post by: Zukipilot on August 31, 2007, 06:06:38 AM
I need a batteryfor da kick and am looking at getting a good one. If I go with an Optima (that I have heard nothing but great things about) what is the difference in colors? What would best fit a 4x4 4 cyl or 6 cyl motor?

Are other drycells good? As good as Optima?

I've been running an Exide Orbital battery(same technology as Optima) in my offroad truck for the last 4 years. I've never had an ounce of trouble with it even on hard winch pulls and I believe it was a bit cheaper than the Optima.

I have run both of them, the batterys are glass matt batterys, they both have acid in them, but have a vent that is hard for the water inside to escape, they will start venting at 120 deg. so if you plan on rolling it get one, otherwise get a regular battery, I run them because of the real cold weather here they start better, the optimas have cheapend up after the year 2000 and are not as good from what I have seen but most of them got so costly that the guys around here were getting them from costco, so not sure if they are the same quality or not? good luck, p.s. my orbital will not start my sammie now after being only six months old but it has a two year unlimited warrenty so i'm good, they changed the looks of it on the new one.

On the NW Wheelers board a lot of people are complaining about the new Optima batteries not being up to snuff, like Mrfuelish said.  Most of them are switching over to the Exide Orbital if they want a Dry Cell.

"so if you plan on rolling it get one, otherwise get a regular battery,"

If you roll over they are great, but they are made to hold up to all the beating and vibration that a battery gets in our trucks.  They were first designed for farm tracktors because of this reason.

I had a red top that only lasted 3 years.  I herd that the yellow are the ones to get for winching.  I bought a cheaper dry cell from Sam's 4 years ago (for my dune buggy) but never got it going.  So when my Optima died I grabed the Sams one and never had a problem so far.  It's been a year.
