Title: need some advice on t-case gear, and eng swap
Post by: mechyannick on September 01, 2007, 12:32:15 AM
hi everyone! need some advice...i'm running a 88 samy on 31's and stock gears,i have lost the use of my 5th gears,i'm looking to buy t-case gears but confuse about wich ratio to get,my sammy is mostly used for off roading, rockcrawling, little mud,and highway to get to the bush...i was thinking about the 5.14:1  or will the 6.1:1 would be better  i hate havin to go downhill on my brake!,but don't want to be shifting in the midle of the hill either!

2nd; i'm still running my 1.3 motor(its getting tired)i can get my hand on a 1.6 8v,should i keep the carb  set up or should i switch over to fi? i will be puting a cam and header.so power wise wich set up would be better: 1.6 with a aftermarket carb, cam and header or cam and header on fi?   thanks for any feedback!

FI is almost always better then carb.  There just isn't a real comparison.  However, it is quite a bit more to setup then just throwing a carb on.  If you want ease of install and you don't have a problem with stalling with your existing setup, you might want to just use your existing intake on the 1.6L engine.

With 31" tires the 5.14:1 would probably server you just fine.  But with the 1.6l you will probably only need the 4:1 kit.  Figure that the 5.14:1 gears will bring your tires back into the same gearing you had stock in high range.  The 6:1 and 6.5:1 kits are designed for 32" and 33" tires.  You will be running a bit higher RPMs, but have plenty of power.  In low range a 6.1:1 is almost 2.5 times higher then your stock gear set, so if you use 2nd gear a lot in low range now you will probably want a bit higher ratio.  If you never leave first, the lower gear kit will probably work.

I say put the 1.6L in first, that way you can judge how much more power and lower speed you need before you put in the gears.

right now i'm always on the first gears(low range)and can bearly make it up the hill, and when i'm going down,i'm on the brake all the way down!
about the engine i will be putting a 1.6,my question was will a 1.6l with an aftermarket carb+cam+header have more power than 1.6l fi+cam+header   thanks

Just put a stock 1.6 with f.i. in and forget the other stuff, it will have about three times or more power than the 1.3 stocker.

I think the only thing that might be diffrent is the starter,if your buying an adapter plate you will use a sammie flywheel and trans so the comp or ecm won't matter auto or stick.
